Life & Work with Kumi Hirose

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kumi Hirose

Hi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was 7 years old, the Japanese Anime called Sailor Moon was very popular and I loved it so much that I often filled my notebooks with Manga. It was Manga that made me like “pictures” before being interested in “art”. When I reached 4th year of college, I drew more pictures than other students. Then I graduated as valedictorian in class and won the Prize of Collection in our university museum.
It was my first award ever and I remember being very excited and inspired. From then on I decided to become a painter.

I’ve been drawing colorful pop pictures since and people around me often said: “You belong in New York more than Japan.” From that time on, I preferred New York as a base for my art production more than Japan or Europe. In 2014, I moved to New York.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I was lucky when I won the award at college. I always struggled getting up at four in the morning and leaving school at 11pm every night. But I learned that if I make an effort, positive results follow. There was a story that a famous manga artist slept only once every three days.
There are many people who have a harder time than I do. But, again, one can’t succeed without effort. I want to emulate someone who works hard and who perhaps even has a harder time than I do. I want to do my best.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

I am a painter who paints every day. I specialize in oil painting, acrylic painting and mixed media. What I think sets my work apart from others is that mine is colorful, pop and powerful. I am proud of the way I can express the incredible passion in my heart through the painting process. I know that art includes elements of sensation, sensibility, fashion, emotion, psychology, spirituality, and mentality. So I create artworks that can relate to people’s hearts, giving them a good and positive energy as well as a great mood.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness means that if our words and actions make someone happy, we will also feel happy. I think that relationships are the important elements to achieve happiness. If you don’t invest in your relationships, you will never be happy. So, I would be happy if people all over the world would achieve positive effects from my work such as “energetic”, “cute”, “interesting”, “beautiful”, and “cool” – to feel good and be happy. To make people and myself happy is my purpose in life.
