Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Wolfe.
Hi Kyle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey into fursuit-making when I was 10 years old. I first saw a video of a group of furries dancing to a song, and thought to myself, “I want one of those!” After realizing that they costed way more than I had in my piggy bank, I decided to try and make one on my own. And so began my journey! I never knew that 10 years later I would still be doing the same things; but even more so, I could have never imagined that I could have turned it into a career! I began working on fursuits full-time in 2021, where I began with 3 commissions on my queue. Since then, I have made my own studio in my home, and have been pouring my heart and soul into each and every fursuit I make.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We all know that when it comes to starting a small business, not only is the business small, but so is the pay. I have struggled with the thought of having to give up my passion in exchange for a boring and draining career, but the love that I have for my craft keeps me going, no matter how small the pay. Being able to see how happy my clients get when opening up their new fursuit really makes it worth it for me at the end of the day.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When someone asks me what my job is, I always say that I’m a “freelance seamstress”, but what I do is truly so much more than that. I am a fursuit maker, which in the eyes of some, can be seen as a magic maker. It’s my job to bring people’s characters to life, and I am able to do that with each fursuit I produce. I get to pour so much love into each piece, which brings them to life for the client!
I am most known for my toony fursuit style which is also what I’m proud of! It has taken me years to find my own style, and I am so proud of the style that I have been able to create with years of practice.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
When I began making fursuits about 10 years ago, I remember that I was always so excited to create that I would end up rushing the process and make my costume turn out a mess. I have learned that even though I have such a huge love for what I do, I need to learn to take it slow in order to create the best suits possible.
