Life & Work with Luis Velez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Luis Velez.

Hi Luis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in Puerto Rico, moved to Texas when I was 9. Began working in the food industry illegally at the age of 14. On and off in the industry until I stumbled upon wine. In 2013 I started my first fine dine restaurant job as a server. It was an Italian chop house called Ferraris and, in this restaurant, I was fortunate enough to try my first expensive wine, 2006 Sassicaia. A one-of-a-kind Super Tuscan that ended up changing my entire life. I became obsessed with wine, from hosting wine parties to reading books and trying wines from all over the world. I decided to work at a restaurant with a much bigger wine selection, so I began my career with Del Friscos in Southlake. This is where I got really good at selling wine and was quickly offered to take over the wine program. I was underqualified and still decided to accept the offer and learned as quickly as I could to do this job right. For my first few months in this position, I was reading books, tasting wine, and listening to wine videos on my way to work. I was with Del Friscos for 7 years. I decided to leave Del Friscos and join the club life. I began working with club corp (renamed Invited) at Tower Club in Dallas. After a few months, I was offered the wine director position at Stonebriar Country Club in Frisco. One of the top-rated club corp country clubs in the country. After a year with Stonebriar, I was offered a job hours away in Horshoe Bay in the Hill Country. I took the challenge and accepted the wine director position at Escondido Golf and Lake Club. I love this place! My plan is to make this wine program one of the best in Texas.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I think taking on such a big job with very little wine knowledge was definitely a struggle. Took me a few months to learn about all the wines on the list. Over the years, I have tried other careers, selling energy as a broker, construction, etc., but I always end up back with my true passion. Wine.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I don’t just run a wine program. I love connecting with people and making sure they feel like family. I host wine-pairing dinners and bring in funky cool wines from all over the world. I learn as much as I can about the members so I can bring in wines that are personal to them. I have themed tastings featuring wines from one specific area in the world. I think what sets me apart is how quickly I become close friends with our membership. Also, my approach to wine has always been presented in a casual way. The last thing people want is to be intimidated by someone because of their knowledge. A humble approach is always best.

What’s next?
Win a scratch-off. I think in the future I see myself running a wine program in Spain at a high-end resort. Or running my own speakeasy/wine bar.
