Hi Malcolm , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2023, my wife was pregnant with our second child and we were approaching the “2 under 2” stage of life! As a husband, I was eager to create some financial margin for myself and my wife. By how? And what?

As I began to contemplate this question I was reminded that my mother’s side of the family are immigrants from Honduras and through the years growing up, I would notice aunts who would either come to our house from a cleaning or had to leave to clean on occasion. I observed them making a living by doing something no one sees, but everyone notices if not done well.

Having this in mind when thinking about how I would make supplement income, I also thought about how much I value simple work and thought of a cleaning business. A business that wouldn’t just allow me to make money, but would eventually generate income for others also. I also began dreaming about what it would look like to reform the way cleaners experience their work by cultivating a culture where they are esteemed, celebrated, and dignified in an industry that doesn’t always value its people. After prayer and some conversations with my wife, I was all in! I reached out to family and close friends to see if they’d be willing to give anywhere between $50-$100 for my $1,000 goal to purchase my first set of cleaning equipment. Their response was overwhelming and we raised over 2 times more than the goal. Now I was ready!

After over 100 phone calls to local pre-schools and businesses, a business was willing to allow me to earn their trust as a cleaning provider. After about a year of cleaning a pre-school Monday- Friday ALONE (99% of the time) for 3 hours per night, I began to ask, “Is this work scalable?”. And the answer is absolutely.

Fast forward one and a half years, we have a small cleaning team that we want to grow as new opportunities arise. We are right where we need to be to scale healthily in 2025.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The difficult thing about growing a cleaning business is that I was simultaneously doing my full-time job, being a highly involved father, while having to clean alone every weekday for 3 hours starting at 7 pm.
I was blessed to have good friends who would help me occasionally and I don’t take their help lightly. The mental and physical toll was getting increasingly difficult, but was the price I had to pay during that time to learn how to clean and what I would be like for cleaners that I would eventually hire. I knew that I could only lead people where I’ve been and the cost of that is worth it.
