Life & Work with Mallory Tolbert & Marissa Hercules

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mallory Tolbert & Marissa Hercules.

Hi Mallory & Marissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
We are two sisters from Texas who have a love of good food and spending lots of quality time in the kitchen. Over the years, our passion for food has continued to grow as we began exploring new hobbies like cake decorating, food photography, creating recipes, and so much more. Finally, we decided to put our heads together and create The Curly Spoon as a place where we could share all of our favorite creations.

We started our blog in May of 2021 as both a creative outlet and business venture. The idea of working for ourselves was very appealing because we could forge our own career path without being constrained by someone else’s expectations. We wanted to start a business that would enable us to use our talents in the workplace and spend time with our families. As of now, we are excited to see what the future holds for us and where The Curly Spoon blog will take us.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We’ve both faced a lot of rejection and overcome many obstacles to get where we are today. From personal challenges to the learning curves of running a business, we had our fair share of difficulties along the way. Some of the most important lessons we’ve learned are to be persistent in hard work, especially during setbacks, and never to stop learning to improve yourself and your business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We own and operate a food and recipe blog that features creative food styling, photography, and videography. Along with crafting delicious recipes, we love creating digital content that showcases food in unique and beautiful ways. In addition to obtaining degrees in related fields, we both have spent years honing our respective creative crafts.

We want to show people that making delicious food can be done by anyone, regardless of their experience level. Food is a great way to bring people together and create memories. We strive to make those experiences accessible to all people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
If there’s one thing we’ve learned as entrepreneurs, it’s that you create your own luck. One quote we live by is, “There’s no such thing as luck. Luck is where preparation meets opportunity.” If you work hard to prepare yourself for future opportunities, you will be ready when they arise.
