Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Hinojosa
Hi Marissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My photography journey started in the most natural way—capturing moments of my kids with a simple, inexpensive camera. What began as a way to document their growth quickly turned into a passion for photography. I found myself wanting to learn more, upgrading my gear, and eventually taking photos for friends and family. Before I knew it, word spread, and my hobby turned into a small business. That business kept growing, and then an unexpected opportunity led me to open my own photography studio in historic downtown Grand Prairie. Now, I not only get to do what I love every day, but I also provide a creative space for other photographers and creators to bring their visions to life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest struggles in building my photography business has been balancing work and family life. As a parent, my schedule is always packed with my kids’ activities, school, and just the day-to-day responsibilities of being a mom. Finding time to grow my business while still being present for my family has been a challenge. There were long nights editing after the kids went to bed and early mornings preparing for shoots while juggling everyday life. But through it all, I’ve learned to manage my time better, set boundaries, and appreciate the flexibility that photography gives me. It’s not always easy, but the passion I have for what I do keeps me going, and seeing how far I’ve come makes all the hard work worth it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in capturing the milestones and special moments of families, children, and high school seniors. Since my journey started with photographing my own kids, I naturally developed a love for family photography. I understand how important it is to freeze those fleeting moments—whether it’s the joy of a child’s laughter, the bond between family members, or the excitement of a senior preparing for their next chapter. My goal is to create timeless, authentic images that families can cherish for years to come.
As a photographer, I’m most proud of how far I’ve come—from picking up a camera to capture my kids’ moments to building a thriving business and opening my own studio. It’s been an incredible journey, and seeing the impact my work has on families is what means the most to me. I love when clients tell me how much they cherish the photos I’ve taken, especially when they become lasting memories for them. I’m also proud of creating a space where other photographers and creatives can bring their visions to life. It’s rewarding to know that my passion has not only turned into a career but also a resource for my community.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Opening my own photography studio was a big risk, but it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. When the chance came, I had to step outside my comfort zone and trust in the growth of my business. There were (and still are) a lot of uncertainties—will it do well? Will people book the space? But I believe in my work, my vision, and the need for a creative space in my community. The studio is just opening, and I truly hope it thrives. It’s both exciting and nerve-wracking, but I’m looking forward to seeing where this new chapter takes me and the photographers who use the space.
I believe that taking risks is necessary for growth. If I had stayed in my comfort zone, I never would have turned my passion for photography into a business, and I definitely wouldn’t have opened my own studio. Of course, risks come with uncertainty, and that can be scary—but I’ve learned that if you never take the leap, you’ll never know what could have been. For me, every risk I’ve taken in my photography journey has led to something bigger, even if it didn’t always go exactly as planned. I see risk as an opportunity—an opportunity to learn, to grow, and to create something meaningful.
