Life & Work with Martell Holloway

Today we’d like to introduce you to Martell Holloway.

Martell, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Creatively, things started at home. I recall my interest struck when my dad and I would sit on Saturday mornings watching cartoons, and he’d draw some of our favorite characters. From then on, I traced the characters of the TV show Boondocks from the funny papers. The discovery of me being skilled at doodling kicked off in high school. I was asked by my peers to illustrate their projects, and the teachers would offer the opportunity to design banners for school festivities. Later, it became a business when I was provided the opportunity to display a few canvas pieces in a group exhibit held at the Valley View Mall.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say that it was easy. But what would I’ve learned? No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Some struggles I encountered and overcame were self-doubt just not thinking I was good enough. I overcame this by believing in myself and practicing as much as possible. Also, not being able to afford certain materials and classes that would help me progress as an artist. I conquered this by seeking art programs, part-time jobs, and developing a trade such as barbering. The “Nos” at one point had gotten to me. Being rejected by galleries, and being told that my style was too this and not enough that, was a hurdle. I persevered by producing 20 canvas works, rented a space, and advertised my first three exhibits.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in being a multidisciplinary artist. I’m known for taking inspiration from my environment and cliché sayings, turning them into anime-influenced images on medium to large canvases, using the dry brush method with acrylics, charcoal, and graphite. Furthermore, I’m most proud of being able to share information that I gained along the way.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
My fondest childhood memory is watching cartoons. I was stoked seeing The Ninja Turtles animated.
