Life & Work with Mary Elisabeth Denmon of Aubrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Elisabeth Denmon.

Hi Mary Elisabeth, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I believe that my inner bent for design started the moment I was born. I do have a bachelors of science degree from Texas Tech University in Interior Design, but my journey with design started long before my college days. When I was about 8 years old I asked my parents for a doll house. But, not just any doll house. I wanted to be able to move the rooms around and the furniture around to be able to change the vibe in this house. I did get my doll house, but it was not long before I asked my dad to have electricity put into my doll house so that I could have lights. My dad installed electricity and I got chandeliers and lamps. All was good for a few weeks until I asked my dad to put plumbing in my doll house so that I could have working bath tubs and sinks. Thank goodness this is where he put his foot down. I have owned my own business for 28 plus years and have had the opportunity to work all over the country. We moved often for my husband’s job, so this allowed me the opportunities to meet new people and contractors to come alongside our clients to create magic together. I am fortunate in that I have a wonderful team of contractors that understand me and understand the importance of integrity and completion. It does not matter how crazy my ideas are, they always are on board to figure out the best way to achieve our goals. Most recently, I have written a book title, “The Princess and The RV: Finding peace in Life’s Detour’s.” This book was inspired by the last move we did before moving into our house we live in now. We went on an unexpected journey and lived in an RV while doing said journey. The plan was to live in our RV for about 3 months to figure out where we wanted to live. The reality was we lived in our RV for 17 months and it was one of the most challenging times in both my husband’s and I’s life. You will have to get the book when it release mid September 2025.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No road to success is smooth. I encounter obstacles daily with what I do. It may. be a contractor has an issue that they can’t figure out or a part cannot be found or my carpenter is unable to source a piece of trim to match some existing trim in a client’s house. If you have worked with me, my contractors will verify that I am never one to see the problem. I always say that all problems have a solution. I also don’t like to call them problems. I like to say that it sounds like we have a challenge that needs conquering or something of the like. Owning your own business is not for the weak. It can be an overwhelming amount of work at the beginning and you have to truly make your own support system. You have to get out there and network and meet people so that you keep yourself grounded and are reminded that most everything you are going through is very normal. It just takes some grit and determination to get your ball rolling. But, once that ball is rolling the sky is the limit in how you navigate your journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an interior designer/contractor. Most people you meet will have met or know an interior designer. But, an interior designer/contractor is rare. Why do I call myself a contractor as well? I am very fortunate in that I have a great team of people I work with. I never like to say they work for me, because that is simply not the case. We work for the client and it is our job to understand the scope of the project and then it is my job to execute the vision to the client and navigate the process with them. I am most proud of jobs that involve the whole house. For example, I had a client that had pipes burst during a freeze, which resulted in 17 inches of water in her downstairs. We came in and accessed the damage and worked with insurance agents to get the scope of the work approved and began demo with ripping out the floors, the cabinets, the fixtures and some walls. The only thing that stayed was the foundation, windows, most doors and all the bath tubs, except in the Master Bathroom. We worked on this project from February until August, but it was one of the most rewarding projects in that my client became my friend and we thoroughly enjoyed a project that could have been a real burden for some. I think what sets me apart from others is that I never see a problem that can’t be fixed and if my clients can dream it, then I am the one to make their dreams come to life. I love when my clients want to add unique fixtures or furnishings to give their space true authenticity to their lifestyle.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I was bitten by a snake when I was 3 1/2 years old. I was at a family friends tank and walking along the edge when a cotton mouth water moccasin bit my ankle. My dad scooped me up and drove me to our local doctor in the small town we lived in and we boarded the brand new ambulance in route to San Antonio. This drive normally took almost an hour, but we made it in 25 minutes. I was completely packed in ice and rushed to surgery upon entering the hospital. The doctors had to cut my leg from ankle almost to my knee to remove the poison and make sure it did not get to my heart. I survived the surgery and upon being released from the hospital 6 weeks later, I promptly came home to swallow a quarter I found on the coffee table while navigating my new brace while learning to walk again. I now have a really cool scar on my leg, and I like to tell my children they should never underestimate me, because God has a purpose for me.
