Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Scott.
Hi Matt, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been an artist of some form since I was a child. Professionally I’ve mostly been in some form of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic work through the years as well as the screen-printing industry for 22 years. I owned a Landscaping company in my 20’s for 7 years. Went back to college to in for theological degrees, later had a complete worldview change, and went back to my trades as a tech. The last 15 years I’ve been a traveling field service tech for industrial CNC machines globally. During the Covid years, I realized I’d wanted to be home more and to go back into business for myself. Coming from a CNC background and with the cost of personal CNC machines at an all-time low, I started by purchasing my first laser CNC. Then a vinyl cutter and heat press. I started doing custom laser engraving/cutting, vinyl decals, and T-shirts via e-commerce.
The majority of my income is from Etsy. That’s been the best platform for me thus far besides my own website.
I’ve just added 3D printing to the lineup and will be offering prints for sale soon as well.
I’ve always had a love of movies, music, and symbolism so I knew I wanted to make collectibles and nostalgic items that just aren’t readily available and to offer things I would want to own myself so that’s the direction I went in what I make and sell.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There were definitely challenges along the way. Learning how to work with new media, learning the respective programs of each machine despite understanding CNC language, learning the best and most cost-effective way to purchase materials, pricing items, and so on.
The biggest learning curve was how to best produce my listings from the photography, to wording to rising up the algorithms to be seen on e-commerce sites. Now it’s a well-oiled machine after putting in the time and research.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Through my theological and scientific studies all my life, I gained a deep love and appreciation of symbolism, as I find symbols are the simplest and most thought-provoking forms that encapsulate vast amounts of information and ideas.
My love of the ’80s, film, music, and cultural phenomena as well, are seen clearly in all I sell.
Branding and visual appeal I think are what I’m most proud of besides my products themselves. Also, how far I’ve come since opening. My philosophy is that I wouldn’t make anything I wouldn’t buy myself and I refuse to let anything go that’s not up to quality standards.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I interact with my customers via email or messaging through e-commerce sites. On custom orders, we work together, and I send a proof of the designs before I start.
