Life & Work with Matt Yigit of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Yigit

Hi Matt, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Meet Matt: The Creative Mind Behind Tiles Workshop

Introduction

Nestled in the vibrant art scene of Dallas, Tiles Workshop is bringing the rich tradition of Turkish mosaic lamp-making to the city. Based in Dallas, the workshop has quickly become a local favorite for those seeking a creative and cultural experience. At its core is Matt, a passionate entrepreneur who has turned his love for creativity and craftsmanship into an immersive, hands-on experience for the community.

The Journey: From Turkey to Ohio to Texas

Matt’s journey to launching Tiles Workshop is deeply rooted in his Turkish heritage. Born and raised in Turkey, he was surrounded by the beauty of mosaic art from an early age. Learning the craft in his homeland, mosaic-making was always his passion. However, his career initially took him in a different direction—software engineering. He spent years designing complex systems and solving problems in the tech world. But his love for craftsmanship and creativity eventually led him back to his artistic roots.

Ten years ago, Matt moved from Turkey to Ohio, where he continued his career in software engineering while nurturing his passion for mosaic art. Eventually, his desire to share his cultural heritage and artistic skills led him to Texas, where he founded Tiles Workshop—an experience that combines history, culture, and hands-on creativity. Today, Tiles Workshop is proud to be a Dallas-based business, offering locals and visitors a unique way to engage with Turkish art. The workshop is not limited to Dallas alone—Matt also offers workshops in nearby cities, bringing the joy of mosaic-making to a wider audience.

“I’ve always loved the idea of building something from scratch,” Matt shares. “Growing up in Turkey, I was captivated by the intricate designs, the vibrant colors, and the deep history behind mosaic art. It has always been a part of me.”

What Makes Tiles Workshop Special

Unlike a traditional art class, Tiles Workshop is an experience. Attendees don’t just make a lamp—they dive into centuries-old techniques, learning the symbolism behind the patterns and colors while creating their own unique masterpiece. Each workshop is paired with Turkish tea or coffee and baklava, adding an extra layer of cultural immersion.

“My goal is to provide more than just a workshop—I want people to leave with a sense of accomplishment, relaxation, and a new appreciation for this beautiful art form,” says Matt.

Looking Ahead

As demand grows, Matt is exploring new ways to expand Tiles Workshop—collaborating with other artists, offering private events, and even considering a permanent studio space in Dallas. “This is just the beginning,” he says. “I want to keep growing, keep creating, and most importantly, keep sharing this beautiful art with the world.”

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Challenges and Lessons Learned

Like any entrepreneur, Matt faced initial doubts about launching a business in a competitive market. “I wondered—how do I stand out? How do I get people to trust a new experience?” he recalls. But through strategic branding, collaborations with local businesses, and word-of-mouth referrals, Tiles Workshop quickly gained traction.

However, the road has not always been smooth. Establishing a new business in a city with existing creative spaces required Matt to build trust within the community. Finding the right audience, refining the workshop experience, and balancing logistics like sourcing high-quality materials and securing workshop spaces were early challenges. Additionally, spreading awareness and generating consistent bookings took time and effort. Through perseverance and a commitment to delivering a high-quality, authentic experience, Matt overcame these hurdles and built a loyal following.

Building a community has been key. From corporate team-building events to private celebrations, Matt has tailored the workshops to various audiences, making art accessible to all.

We take pride in fostering creativity, bringing people together, and helping them appreciate the beauty of handmade art. Additionally, we are proud of the community we are building—a place where people can connect, learn, and celebrate a centuries-old tradition.

What Sets Us Apart

While there may be other creative workshops in the area, what makes Tiles Workshop unique is its deep connection to Turkish culture and authenticity. Unlike a simple DIY craft class, our workshops provide:

– Authenticity: We use traditional methods and materials sourced to reflect the true essence of Turkish mosaic art.

– Cultural Enrichment: Every session includes storytelling about the history and significance of mosaics in Turkish and Middle Eastern cultures.

– Hands-On Learning: We provide a fully interactive and engaging experience where participants actively create, rather than just watch and follow instructions.

– A Personal Touch: Every participant receives individual guidance, ensuring they leave with a piece they are truly proud of.

– Exclusive Settings: Our workshops are held in modern event spaces with small group sizes, allowing for an intimate and high-quality learning experience.

– On-the-Go Workshops: We offer the flexibility of bringing the workshop experience to private parties and corporate events, making it convenient for various groups.

At Tiles Workshop, we don’t just teach art—we create lasting memories, meaningful experiences, and a bridge between cultures through the beauty of mosaics. Whether for personal enjoyment, a unique gift, or a team-building event, our workshops bring creativity, culture, and craftsmanship together in a way that stands apart from the rest.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Advice on Finding a Mentor and Networking in the Creative Community

The Power of Networking and Mentorship

Networking and mentorship have been invaluable in growing Tiles Workshop and connecting with the creative community in Dallas. The journey of starting and expanding a business is filled with challenges, and having the right people around can make all the difference. Finding a mentor or building a strong network doesn’t happen overnight, but being intentional about where and how you connect with others can open many doors.

Engaging with Local Event Planners and Art CommunitiesOne of the most effective ways I’ve expanded my network is by engaging with local event planners and creative communities. Dallas has a thriving arts scene with numerous networking opportunities, and I’ve found great value in attending:

Creative networking events such as Creative Mornings Dallas, where entrepreneurs, artists, and business owners share their experiences and insights.

Local art fairs and markets where I’ve met other artists and small business owners who are passionate about their craft.

Community-driven workshops and pop-up events that bring together people who appreciate art and culture.

Artist networking events at Tower Club Dallas, which provide a fantastic opportunity to connect with other creatives, discuss collaborations, and explore new opportunities.

LBT Gallery events, where artists and creatives gather to showcase their work, share ideas, and foster collaborations within the local art community.

Fundraising events with the Texas Rangers Foundation and Dallas Margarita Society, where we’ve had the opportunity to contribute to meaningful causes while networking with influential figures in the community.

Building relationships with event planners has also been crucial. These professionals are always looking for unique experiences to offer their clients, and by introducing them to the concept of mosaic lamp workshops, I’ve been able to establish partnerships that benefit both sides. They help bring my workshops to new audiences while I provide them with a distinctive, hands-on creative experience for their events.

Finding the Right Mentors

Mentorship doesn’t always come in the form of one person guiding you through every step of your journey. Instead, I’ve found that having different mentors for different aspects of my business has been helpful. Here’s what has worked for me:

Joining local business and art-focused groups like Visit Dallas and BNI Dallas, where experienced professionals share their knowledge and support.

Attending industry workshops and panel discussions where seasoned entrepreneurs provide insights on business growth and creative strategy.

Connecting with other artists and business owners who have been in similar situations and are willing to share their experiences.

The Importance of Giving Back

Networking isn’t just about finding people who can help you—it’s also about offering value in return. I always try to contribute to the community by sharing my knowledge, promoting other creatives, and supporting local events. This has helped me build strong, lasting relationships with people who share my passion for creativity and entrepreneurship.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking to expand your network or find a mentor, start by immersing yourself in the local creative community. Attend events, collaborate with others, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people whose work you admire. Building authentic relationships takes time, but the connections you make can have a lasting impact on your journey.
