Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Brown
Max, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
. I believe it all started with the same love for art that I’m chasing now. My parents had an old upright grand piano that I would bang away on, annoyingly, throughout their entire television lineup experience. They were beyond patient, and this allowed me to discover that three notes make a chord; I’ve been faking it ever since. I have songs and stories inside me, and how I go about creating them is defined by my desire to make stuff that I think is cool and share it with people looking for something inspiring, heartfelt, and unusual.
So far, this passion has led to several projects, including a Jurassic Park parody musical, multiple epic bands, an audio drama action podcast called Scare Fighter 3, and a new concept album, ‘The Witch Named Isabelle Sane.’ This album tells the story of an exiled witch caught in the midst of a war between the bears of the forest and a corrupt chemical plant.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe the biggest challenge for me personally was promoting and marketing my own work. Although I’m a sociable person, when I’m creating alone, the introvert in me takes over, and I might as well be on a space station. I’m happy sharing my work with close friends, which makes self-promotion feel unnatural. This can be a significant obstacle for creatives trying to make a living from their art. Fortunately, there are more tools available now to help people discover your work, but they can still be costly. Ultimately, when progress seems difficult , remember that creating is deeply beneficial for your personal growth.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a creative person with a passion for music, art, and storytelling. I enjoy crafting unique musical experiences that bring people together. I love trying to unite people through music and stories. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to do what I love alongside my friends.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the audio drama we created, Scare Fighter 3. It started as an idea I had with my friend Brady Echols to create a soundtrack for a fictional 1990s video game. After completing it, we couldn’t let the project end. We decided to continue the story, using the 16-bit video game music as the backdrop for an entire soundscape, complete with sound effects and voice acting. This evolved into producing the biggest, most action-packed comedy podcast ever. We’ve had two awesome seasons and look forward to making more.
Next, I’m teaming up with Brady again to create an epic witch-themed album.under the name King Blanket. Musically, it’s a fusion of everything that’s influenced me, from folk to rock to vaudeville ballads. I strive to push the boundaries of what’s possible in music and audio storytelling, and I believe this passion sets me apart. Hopefully, I can share these experiences with like-minded friends and collaborators.”
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
The approach that has worked for me is attending events and collaborating with fellow creators who share my passion for making cool stuff.
By spotlighting each other’s efforts within our communities, we can support and amplify one another’s work.
In terms of a mentor, I’ll offer just one word: Yoda. Yes, the wise Jedi master from Star Wars. As Yoda says, “Do or do not. There is no try.”
This sage advice from the wise space muppet encourages us to take concrete action, It’s the momentum generated by doing that will ultimately energize our projects.
