Today we’d like to introduce you to Micheal Matthews
Hi Micheal, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in the beauty industry as a makeup artist for MAC Cosmetics in 2015. Thats where I really feel in love with the process of transformation and the power of makeup. I learned how to utilize color and shadow to enhance features on a human being. Along with how creativity and skill can really give someone confidence.
In 2021, I pivoted careers and became a receptionist at a popular hair salon in the heart of Dallas, after four months into that role I was prompted to the Salon Director. I learned a lot from my salon owner who had been in the industry for 20 plus years. It inspired me to pursue hairdressing. I immediately enrolled into the Aveda Institute after working in the salon for a year..
While I was in school I took on a part time role as an educator for Givenchy Beauty where I traveled the metroplex and educating the public about the brand and makeup artistry. My hands have always been in beauty and attending the Aveda Institute helped me learn how to manage my creativity through technical training. I also was able to participate in training and photoshoots for the Neil corporation and Smashbox cosmetics.
After I graduated in 2023, I stared an apprenticeship at Hair+Industry.
The Hair+Industry team is a group of skilled and seasoned hairdressers from all different backgrounds and technique driven education.
I have worked alongside Austin and Samantha Finley who previously were the Creative Director and President of Toni+Guy. My training has been rigorous and very thorough.
I consider myself a forever student because I am always learning something new and pushing my comfortability through knowledge.
I am now taking clients at Hair+Industry and I am eager to take my career to the next level.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I must say it has been a smooth road. I think my biggest obstacle has been battling myself and balancing having a work life balance.
Im a perfectionist by nature and I become frustrated when I do not grasp an understanding of something new right away.
I have a high expectation for myself. Recently I have learned that giving myself grace is just as important as being my best.
There is a-lot to learn from failure and practicing that principle has been an ongoing learning lesson for me.
I have worked really hard to be where I am now and have put many hours in.
I still do, I am learning how to give myself time to rest and reset.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love beautiful hair and seamless clean makeup.
My speciality is making people feel and look their best.
I am most proud of the training and I have received because it allows me to work technically sound.
I think what sets me apart from others is being able to adapt to any client or any circumstance. I have a wide range of experience and it has given me the ability to see things many different ways to get to the desired result.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a curious child and loved make-believe.
I was always dreaming of more.
My interests were being with my family, especially my female cousins. I was always drawn to women and their beauty.
I also loved fantasy. Films, books, and creating spaces to dream and create.
