Life & Work with Diego Taormina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diego Taormina.

Hi Diego, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started in the radio industry when I was 26. Back then I had a different idea about what the job would be like and what I would be able to do in it. After a pretty great 8-year run, I knew I needed to take a break from the travel, late nights, parties and figure out if this was what I really wanted to do with my life. I completely disconnected from that world until I saw an ad for a digital radio station and decided to apply. I realized how much I missed the music and atmosphere but still wanted to do things my own way. I knew more about what I would be getting into this time around and got to work building The Asylum Radio Network. My team and I wanted to make something that reached other music lovers like ourselves and introduce them to bands that maybe don’t get the play they should be getting.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think anything you try to build from the ground up is going to go smoothly. Finding the best platform for the station, building a team of people with similar interests yet enough of a difference to keep it varied and ideas fresh, trying different social media approaches and so many other details that need fine-tuning have all presented their own challenges on this journey.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m mostly known for being a DJ through The Asylum as well as the stations I was with in the past. I’m also lucky enough to get to host festivals and shows for some really great bands. As project manager for The Asylum, it’s like I have a backstage pass to a never-ending show of talent, events, and other industry personalities I would never be a part of otherwise.

I think what sets me apart from others in our industry is that I left my ego at the door when I first opened it into the Internet Radio world. I took the time to figure out who I was and why I wanted to be a part of this world and it’s helped keep me focused on the main goal of just celebrating music through our platform.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
It’s always the music. I grew up on FM radio and you really did hear the same songs and bands on repeat. I want to expand people’s tastes and introduce great artists to an industry that has historically been pay to play. I love that internet radio has offered so much air time to artists that would have been put on a shelf by their label because their sound ‘isn’t just right’ or they ‘don’t have the popular look right now’.
