Life & Work with Nicholas Gully

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Gully.

Hi Nicholas, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Imagination has always been my strength. My fascination with the complexities of light and shadow led me toward film photography. In the spring of 2020, I expressed interest to my friend Christian Garza about film photography. After we photo-walked Sundance Square in Fort Worth, Texas, I immediately became passionate about 35mm film. Since then, my work has been used in advertising for local DFW artists, entrepreneurs, and businesses such as: DCEO Magazine, Daisha Board Gallery, Dallas Contemporary. I’ve earned gallery representation in Grapevine, Texas at RTown Gallery. I’ve participated in juried exhibitions within Art Space 111 in Fort Worth, McKinney Performing Arts Center, and South Dallas Cultural Center in Oak Cliff. Christian Garza (The man who helped foster my interest for film photography) and I have earned an opportunity to exhibit our work in Rome, Italy.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been my enthusiasm, confidence, and perseverance that has set the tone for the pace I’ve been able to learn, adapt, and recover from the challenges of this field. One of my greatest obstacles yet has been relationships. Following my interests while being guided toward my passion with vigor, I had to decide how I wanted to shape my network. My peers are an inspirational collective.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, I sell 1 of 1 prints of my paintings and photographs. I believe each buyer deserves an exclusive opportunity to own a personal piece of my creativity. I’m known for my black-and-white artwork. I am proudest of the reception the work receives. I really take a closer look of the textures we don’t spend time to study in our busy lives. What separates me from the rest is the quality. I’m a fine artist. These photographs aren’t for popularity; these are timeless documentary works.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory comes from a very early age. I recall being swaddled and looking up at my mother’s orange-tinted half-lit face. The street light would shine through the curtains, and I could remember gazing into each other eyes until I fell asleep. It was silent and intimate. Seeing silhouettes of her expressions from underneath gave me such vast perspective as a small child. I incorporate the same abstract perspective into my portraitures today.

  • My current custom 1 of 1 paintings are 11×14. They’re priced at $200.
