Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Torres
Hi Oscar, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
To begin with, I must say that I am the father of two girls, Amanda (10) and Aurora (8), husband of a beautiful girl (Nathalie), with whom I have been in a relationship for 13 years.
As part of the context I must give you, it is important to know that I have only been in the United States for 7 months. We arrived on July 14, 2024.
That said, let’s begin:
If we talk about the personal part: I am Venezuelan and I am 38 years old. From a very young age I always had a taste for music, without imagining that it would be what would give great meaning to my life, that I was going to sing, that I would live from music. Not only from the stage, but behind it as well. I have 4 siblings: Otto, Daniela, Lubin and Oscar Jr.
I come from a humble home, with separated parents, my mother was orphaned at the age of 9 and her study opportunities were not many. However, she is a very hardworking woman who with her example and her strong character taught me the important things in life: She gave me a good education, good manners, instilled values in me and taught me the importance of working hard.
Ever since I was born, I always wanted to live in the United States. I have always said, jokingly, that the 50 stars of my Confederate flag run in my DNA. I always felt a strong connection to everything I could perceive from movies, TV series, Hollywood and the world of entertainment. So I can say that I am starting to live one of my great dreams, to be here. The other dream was to have a beautiful family AND I HAVE IT.
My father’s role has also been very important, because despite not living with me, he was always a great friend, like the voice of my conscience. Always with timely advice and with a great ability to have a broader and deeper vision of the things of life. He tried to give me many teachings, for example, through the metaphor “seeing beyond the tip of the nose”, inviting me not to focus only on the immediate or the superficial and inviting me to look beyond the obvious to better understand situations. That, just to give you an example. He placed a lot of emphasis on taking care of good friendships and the importance of being a gentleman, of being elegant and of taking care of the details of everything in life.
I had a healthy childhood and youth. I loved sports, music, TV, video games, fast food, and also good food. Those things haven’t changed in my life (laughs). I practiced swimming, drawing, English, Latin percussion. My mother tried to keep me busy and away from the street, to exploit my skills.
Since my last year of high school I have been immersed in the world of music, I began to sing in youth groups, until today that I have a short career as a soloist. At the same time, I have developed professionally in different roles in the entertainment industry, such as: public relations for artists, road manager, tour manager and even managing to form my own catalog of artists, as a manager. It’s been 20 years since I started singing at small parties with friends, without imagining that one day I would be able to perform in front of 7000 people.
I arrived 7 months ago in Frisco, a quiet and prosperous city that we like a lot to live in. We have managed to make great friendships with our North American neighbors, they have shown themselves to be very generous and unconditional. (Thanks, Jake, Craig and Chrissy.) We came to the United States in search of better study opportunities for our daughters, quality of life, and career advancement for us. Always in search of stability, which every family wants.
My philosophy of life: “God, Family, Music. Always in that order, never different.” If your life has that order of priorities, nothing can go wrong. Always God first. When you are busy prioritizing your relationship with God, He also prioritizes you and takes care of your business. With God you never lose. No one gives a stone to his son if he asks for bread, so is God as father.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Go! I don’t intend to be a victim, but I must say that nothing has been easy for me in life. I could say that how much or how little I have, has been the product of a lot of insistence, a lot of perseverance, a lot of faith and never allowing myself to give up. I always took it as motivation to come from a humble home. In other words, not having money or coming from a wealthy family will not represent an excuse for not achieving things.
I understood that if God had given me intelligence and great abilities, it is because I could achieve my goals and overcome obstacles with those tools. It was just a matter of knowing how to use them. From this attitude, I can only bring to the table one of my greatest influences: The iconic Rocky Balboa. I love the story of the character, his life and how he faced every blow of life, beyond the cinematic product that is also spectacular.
I try not to put mental limitations on myself, not to fall prey to my mental ghosts. Furthermore, I try to break away from that a lot. If it’s something you can conceive inside your head, it’s something potentially achievable, you just have to go for it until you reach it.
Much of what happens and doesn’t happen in our lives is because we use or don’t use our minds properly.
When you don’t know something, for example, a way to perform a procedure, play an instrument, drive, etc., your brain behaves confused because it doesn’t know the way to get to that destination. Once you start thinking about options, alternatives, possibilities, you start teaching them how to get the way to your goals. Once the brain finds its way, the rest comes by itself. The brain starts working confident that it knows what it is doing and starts giving you ideas and more options, everything flows.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I told you before, I am a singer. I have gone through different musical groups that contributed to my training as an artist, until a few years ago I started my career as a soloist.
In addition to all this, I have more than 18 years dedicated to Music Marketing, developing digital strategies for artists and their careers in countries such as Venezuela, Colombia, Dominican Republic, United States, to mention a few countries.
As a singer and as a professional, what I enjoy most is sharing with people from different countries, contributing to the careers of other artists and budgets, and the relationship with the media. It is one of the things that I am passionate about in my work, being that bridge, that link between the artist and the media.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something very particular about the world of entertainment and the media is that fame is not at all related to being wealthy. Being recognized does not mean that you are a millionaire.
Artists and all of us who make a living in the world of entertainment can one day have breakfast with a Governor, with a Mayor, have coffee with the President, perhaps with a Rock star, but when we get home we are still dealing with common problems. When you get home you realize that you forgot to buy sugar or salt, that you didn’t buy the coffee, that your wife is upset because you couldn’t tell her that you would be late. It happens to all of us, because we are normal and very real human beings.
Many people get an idea of our lives and assume from what they see on social media, but honestly, there is always a story behind each photo and it is not always something easy to confess.
