Parris and Lindsey Zen Trap Podcast

Hi Parris and Lindsey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story. 
We are Parris and Lindsey of the Zen Trap Podcast. Two friends since college from the best HBCU and college there is North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. We both majored in Engineering, which is how we initially met over 10 years ago. We started our podcast in 2021 after surviving the emotional effects of the global pandemic and falling into a habitual lull of corporate America. 

In an effort to pull ourselves out of that lull, we started the Zen Trap Podcast. It was our mission to inspire and empower people experiencing similar feelings to continuously seek internal peace to maximize their potential and accomplish the goals they want out of life. We desire for our listeners to benefit from our own personal journeys of seeking peace and becoming more self-aware. So, we’ve used various avenues to document and share our story, including book and video reviews, music and rap freestyles, along with sharing the stories of our community and network through interviews. This podcast has transformed into something therapeutic and meaningful for us both. 

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One thing that we wanted to focus on in starting this podcast was challenge ourselves to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. So, were there obstacles and challenges? Absolutely, YES. In some moments we pushed ourselves to dig deeper as people and use the obstacles to make us more resilient people and friends. 

As you can imagine, two best friends embarking upon a brand-new business venture that we had zero experience in presented the expected struggles (i.e., editing, lighting, content creation, social media, etc.) along with the logistical responsibilities of fitting into each other’s schedules. Multiply that with everyday personal life obstacles from health, work, family, and other friends, and struggles are inevitable. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Together, we host the Zen Trap Podcast, where you come to get your boost of energy and continuously challenge your awareness. On this podcast, we review videos and books and have conversations all around self-help or continuous improvement physically, emotionally, and spiritually with comedic undertones. Life is heavy enough, so we aim to make it feel just a little bit lighter as you are going through your own journey. The Zen Trap Podcast aims to be a space for growth and discovery where you’re continuously affirmed to Protect Your Peace and to Protect Your Energy. 

We are most proud of our consistency in releasing content since 2021 as we currently have over 100 episodes released, some filmed in other countries as we are travel enthusiasts, 2 mixtapes of Zen Trap, as we like to call it, and merchandise mainly clothing for purchase on our website that aligns with the podcast. 

What sets us apart from others are the unique opinions and experiences we both have coming from 2 black people, male, and female who have seen and experienced different walks of life from country living to city living, corporate America, traveling, sports, food, just culture in general and how we apply that to our everyday life and future we manifest. We think what makes us stand out most is taking such heavy and serious topics and discussing them in a light and comedic way that makes it easy for our listeners to digest and apply to their journey. 

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
One of the most important lessons we feel the COVID-19 crisis exposed was how valuable or essential feeling connected to something is, whether that be a purpose, spiritual practice, or your tribe, i.e., family or friends. Material things can be here today and gone tomorrow, but those connections you build, and form will be what truly matters, so just make sure what is most important to you is treated as such in your everyday life or actions. 

Minding your H.A.T (Health Attention and Time) as your most valuable resources in service of others will allow everything else to work themselves out. 

Lastly, getting comfortable and knowing when to not only ask for help, but seek the help if you are going through something finding a way to not suffer in silence. Find a therapist, coach, book, podcast, mentor, friend, family member, etc., that can help you find the inner peace or build the skills you need to get what you desire from life.
