Life & Work with Richard Sullivan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Richard Sullivan.

Hi Richard, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My name is Richie Sullivan and I am the creative director of a new concept of musical theater called, “What If We’re Robots”.  My last musical project parted ways during the beginning of the pandemic and during that time, there wasn’t a light at the end of the tunnel for live music. I approached Paul Balazs, another musician in the local community with this very ambitious project and I said to him, “with the world being in the condition without our community being able to see live music, let’s give them a show they won’t soon forget”. This was the birth of our new concept of musical theater, “What If We’re Robots”!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road, in 2020, I personally had twelve people in my life pass away for various reasons. As did Paul and everyone else in the band. We all were struggling through depression, anxiety, imposter syndrome, even through 2021 we were all still losing friends and family members due to illnesses, complications, and in some cases, suicide. It has not been an easy path to finish this project, but we pressed on, the hopes of finishing this project and sharing it with the world may have been the only thing keeping us going.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Personally, I am very passionate about the hospitality industry. My focus has been in wine mostly, I have worked as a sommelier for many years. And in the past year or so I shifted to more music-centric front-of-house operations. I love the local music community and I want to support them as much as possible. My long-term goal is to open an old-world audiophile bar and cafe. I want to provide an experience and I love to host, I’m most happy when I see people enjoying a space that I create.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Dallas reminds me a lot of Phoenix which is what I love the most, it reminds me of home. There are a lot of great restaurants, bars, and the community in general is very inclusive. I’m not sure if there’s anything I don’t love, maybe the airport could be closer? Haha
