Life & Work with Riska Johnson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Riska Johnson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I attended Fort Worth Beauty School and finished with 1600 hours of completion to a Cosmetology license in 2009. Right out of school, I landed a Job with Mac Cosmetics through Estée Lauder. I learned the basics in school but outside of school at the Makeup counter and networking with another artist, I developed different skills to perfect my craft and developed my own way of doing makeup. I feel that each artist has their own way of artistry. We learn a lot from each other in such a positive way. In 2010 I met a Dress designer by the name of Tawni Haynes. She pulled me into a project shoot for Gospel Artist Tamela Mann. From then on till now I’ve been traveling and meeting other artists, Actors, and Actresses and doing production projects from award shows to music videos and various projects Between Dallas and Atlanta.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road to success. I’m a business owner. There are slow times. Then there are booming busy times. I think the few challenges I’ve had is being put in a category of always being busy and the assumption of only catering to Celebrities. No! That’s not the case. I do weddings, photoshoots, conventions, small parties… I do it all… I’ve been blessed to be at the right place at the right time to gain my clients with a highlighted platform. But at the end of the day, I still look to them as this is their business too. I’m just in business to make them feel great and look good.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional makeup artist. I specialize in Tv/film projects, weddings, special occasions, photoshoots. I proud of myself because my skill gets better with knowing how things change in the beauty industry. I’m able to keep up with the trend. I’m open to change because it keeps evolving. What sets me apart from others is my drive… I have that crazy faith.

How do you think about luck?
I feel the being at the right place at the right time has struck a few times for me… but more my personality and outgoing spirit keep people calling.
