Life & Work with Sage Funk of Downtown Rockwall, TX

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sage Funk.

Hi Sage, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my career in mental health as a neurotransformational life coach. I had a passion for helping people heal, set goals, and create meaningful change in their lives. While coaching, I quickly realized that many of the challenges my clients faced were rooted in unresolved trauma that the current coaching tools I had could not fully reach. I wanted to go deeper, beyond surface-level change. I wanted help people truly heal not only from the trauma they were aware of, but also from the trauma that lurked deep within their nervous system. I quickly learned that the vast majority of my clients had troubles that existed outside the realm of the conscious mind.

That’s when I discovered brainspotting. Brainspotting is a type of therapy that helps people process and heal from trauma, stress, emotional pain, and even performance blocks. The idea is that where you look with your eyes is linked to how your brain stores experiences. By focusing on certain eye positions, your brain can “unlock” and process stuck emotions or memories in a gentle, natural way- giving your brain the space it needs to heal itself. From my very first training, I felt like I had found the missing piece. The work was powerful, transformative, and unlike anything I had ever experienced—both personally and professionally. I immersed myself in the process, taking as many brainspotting trainings as I could. I was contacting everyone I knew asking if they had heard of this modality. Each step deepened my understanding of how trauma lives in the body and how profound healing can happen when we give the brain and body space to process.

Today, I am a Licensed Professional Counseling Associate under the supervision of Kelley Akins , LPC-S. I am also finishing the brainspotting consultant-in-training program so that I am able to not only teach about this powerful modality but also certify new brainspotters. I currently specialize in helping people work through complex trauma, PTSD, sexual assault, anxiety, depression, attachment wounds, and life transitions. My journey from life coaching to Brainspotting and other therapies has been one of integration—bringing together goal setting and personal growth with deep, somatic healing. Brainspotting has not only shaped the way I work with clients, but also how I live my own life: with presence, resilience, and hope.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I will say it has been worth every bit of hardship. Like many people in helping professions, my journey has been shaped by both personal and professional challenges. As a single mom working multiple jobs while pursuing graduate school and training, I’ve had to navigate financial stress, exhaustion, and moments of doubt about whether I could really balance it all. At times, I questioned if I was doing the right thing or if I was capable of building the career I envisioned. One thing I often tell my clients is “we dont poopoo progress”. What I mean by this is that no matter where you came from or where you are going, don’t forget to celebrate the small things.

On a professional level, stepping into Brainspotting and clinical counseling meant facing my own healing. You can’t hold space for others to process trauma without doing the work yourself, and that can be both painful and transformative. I’ve had to learn how to set boundaries, trust the process, and lean into discomfort. However, each struggle has also been part of what makes me the clinician and coach I am today. I don’t just teach resilience, I’ve lived it. The road hasn’t been easy, but it has been meaningful, and it’s given me a deep empathy for my clients’ journeys.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a counselor and neurotransformational life coach specializing in complex trauma, Brainspotting, and deep emotional healing. My journey began as a life coach, where I helped people set goals and create positive change. Over time, I saw how often unresolved trauma held people back, and that realization drew me into Brainspotting and eventually into the counseling profession.

Today, I am known for my work with complex trauma and for creating a space of complete acceptance, where every client feels safe to bring their whole self into the room. I integrate Brainspotting with other counseling approaches to help clients process trauma, manage anxiety and depression, and navigate life transitions. What sets me apart is the way I blend clinical expertise with compassion and inclusivity, meeting clients exactly where they are. I am most proud of helping people discover their resilience and move toward a future filled with healing and hope.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe risk-taking is an essential part of life and growth. As Brené Brown says, vulnerability is not weakness but our greatest measure of courage, and to me, risk and vulnerability are deeply connected. Some of the most meaningful choices I’ve made have required risk—choosing to have a baby and raise her as a single mom, pursuing graduate school while balancing parenthood, and building a practice zero clients. I also see this in my work every day, anyone who walks into my office for therapy is taking a major risk. They are choosing vulnerability, and that is the price they pay for personal growth. The way I look at it, we all “pay” one of two ways. We either pay by taking the risk and pursuing our dreams, or we pay with our dreams in exchange for staying comfortable. Without risk, we never truly learn the parameters of our existence or discover what we’re capable of. For me, risk isn’t something to fear, it’s the pathway to courage, healing, and the life of your dreams.
