Life & Work with Sarah Rivera

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Rivera.

Hi Sarah, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Thank you for including me in this feature! I started in photography pretty young, by simply needing to be at the same high school as my brother. I learned on film and in the dark room, if you have the chance to learn some time, I highly recommend it! After high school, I took a career in the legal field for about 15 years. While I was working as a paralegal, I started shooting just as a hobby until the love of that overtook and I began searching for what I could I turn into a full-time business.

I already knew I did not want to be a family or wedding photographer but when I found brand photography (also known as commercial photography) I immediately fell in love! This gives me the opportunity to work with a variety of people, get to know them and their business on a level that not everyone does.

I went from working sessions into the weekends on the side of my paralegal career while taking care of 2 kiddos at home to now, where I’ve been running my brand photography business full-time for over a year.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles are real when running a business! I will say that I know that some people struggle knowing what they want to do with their lives or what type of business they want to establish. I am lucky in that sense; I knew right away that this is what I wanted and that I wanted to serve fellow creative business owners by providing them the imagery that matches their message.

The struggles lie in the day-to-day, juggling everything that a business owner does and that a parent/spouse does. My experience in working from home with 2 kids for 8 years really helps me stay prioritized, organized, and focused.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a brand photographer that works with creative entrepreneurs to capture the content that matches their message. Their imagery is used on websites, social media, and other marketing platforms. Brand photography is a fairly new term but is growing rapidly.

I take the business owners’ offers, whether product-based or service based, and capture the photos that can showcase who they are and what they do. The key is understanding what sets them apart in their industry and giving them the imagery to show that to their audience.

I do this by getting to know my clients, their offers, process, and ideal clients. This way we are sure to capture the attention they deserve. I also understand that there are a lot of people that do not like to be the center of attention or get in front of the camera, myself included. I work hard to put them at ease and show them how amazing they are with back-of-camera peeks. A lot of branding includes in action shots and details so the client does not always have to be the center focal point but their business is.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
