Life & Work with Sequoyah Branham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sequoyah Branham

Hi Sequoyah , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
As a lonesome twelve year old, I began writing stories of characters that had the courage to do things I didn’t. What started as a creative outlet in a trying time of life turned into a great passion of mine and now a career!

Growing up ranching, has always given me ample inspiration for stories. My stories feature characters facing the everyday things of ranch life that often become bigger hurdles than the Hollywood stories make losing the ranch to be.

My pursuit of publication and love of marketing came in six years later when I join the Author Conservatory, a three year college alternative for novel writing, publication, and business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey to and so far through authorship has had it’s fair share of twists and bumps!

One of the latest challenges I’ve faced was editing delays! As an independent Author I set my own schedule and contract my own editors directly.

My publication timeline turned out tighter with my second book, In Between Pastures, to start with. Then one of my editors had some big life challenges come up and couldn’t finish my edit. Another editor picked it up, but it was still two and a half weeks later than expected.

I had gotten my own edits applied after that and was ready to turn it into my line editor when she told me she was down with Covid and it might be a week or two before she could get started. I didn’t have time for another delay and scrambled to find another line editor to jump on it right away. The Lord was gracious and a friend of mine was able to start editing right away. She did a fantastic job and challenged my writing to be better.

There were more than a few panicked moments, but all turned out well and I had a polished manuscript on time!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a western contemporary fiction author. I write real ranch stories with no dumb horse moments that would never happen in real life!

My stories focus on the beauty and heartbreak of ranching that characters face day in and day out.
Many westerns fall into being either too soft and fluffy with shirtless ranchers fixing fence (they would never, because barbed wire HURTS), or they are set in the 1800s with women stepping off the porch with a shotgun. While both scenarios make for good stories they don’t fit what I crave as a ranch girl myself.

I write stories with conversations that ranchers will replicate in town at the feed store this week and crises that feel like much bigger deal in the moment than they really are.

Any big plans?
The future is bright with a range of stories I plan to write. I’m taking 2025 off of publishing a novel to build in more time in my publishing deadline (hopefully no more deadline crises) and enjoy building out the next story.
I have a companion product for the Nora Kelly series in the works with plans to announce it in early 2025. I’m excited for the impact that it will have on taking these stories deeper into readers hearts and lives.
