Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven.
Hi Steven, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started at Red Productions a little over 10 years. Being hired on as the company’s first Operations Manager, I handled all the day-to-day tasks of “keeping the lights on and the doors open”. These tasks included hiring, process documentation, A/R, A/P, training, building and resource management, and almost everything in between. Having no professional background in video production, I was offered the opportunity to fulfill the role of Production Coordinator as well as my OM role. From there I spent the rest of my time growing my knowledge in production all the way to Line Producer and Executive Vice President of Red Productions. While running day-to-day operations of Red Productions I also manage the day-to-day operations of our studio and co-working space, Backlot Studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a “bad” road, but I also would not call it smooth. I experienced the same challenges that a lot of individuals in small creative businesses experience. There was a constant worry about financial stability, growth potential, and the sense of belonging having started in a non-creative field. Did a make the right decision? Things like that. But I was extremely lucky to work for a boss who encouraged me to pave my own path in Red Productions, allowing me to find the solutions that got me through the various challenges in my career.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I manage all day-to-day operations of the business which encompasses a lot of things. This can include hiring, firing, processes, optimization, A/R, A/P, leadership and management, and the driver for Profit/Loss success.
As cliche as it sounds, I would say I am known for simply getting things done. This is not a “fairy tale” type of get things done. Rather, I simply follow up with everyone until their tasks are completed. By ensuring their tasks get done, I ensure the company is doing what it needs to to hit our professional, financial, and creative goals.
What I am most proud of are the people I have gotten to develop. Specifically in leadership roles. I don’t really think of myself as a boss or a manager, but really more of a coach. And as a coach, it is my job to bring out the very best in someone so they can then accomplish their goals and dreams.
I would say what sets me apart from others is my sheer tenacity. That is really how I get things done and get others to accomplish their goals. Where others may give up on what they’re trying to accomplish (big or small), I simply keep going.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Again, I would have to say my tenacity. Knowing that I will not give up, no matter the task, has instilled in me a constant belief that I will not fail. It is this belief that has gotten me through the last decade.
