Life & Work with Swapna Abraham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Swapna Abraham.

Swapna Abraham

Hi Swapna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
A singer-songwriter, author, actor, interior designer, media and communications professional, mother of two and grandmother to three, passionate about the elderly, children, and the environment… I shall limit my story here around music – my strong side hustle, marked by highs and lows just like the music itself. After composing, producing, and publishing 21 albums over 24 years, and with a dozen unpublished singles, I was going to give up music altogether in 2016, feeling unfulfilled. I was conflicted. Soon after, I decided to do a painful musical challenge for 1000 days: composing, producing, and publishing a song every day. I cannot even start to explain how difficult this was. Eventually, it was 2321 songs over the 1000 days with at least 2 made every day (live, and one of which was for children) and culminated in 4 world records in singing-songwriting and a doctorate (honoris causa) in music.

I took a break from mainstream work at the start of this year to publish all my musical work that was in the pipeline and embarked on studio-producing the 1000 songs for children that will soon reach the stores in a book – 2 volumes of 500 songs each. I started singing at the age of four, started writing lyrics (poems) at around nine years of age, and composed my first song when I was fifteen. It was after I won University competitions two years in a row that I got invited to collaborate. My style of music covers pretty much the entire gamut from pop and country to folk and soul. I was an exclusive gospel music artist for about two decades. My greatest influences were George Michael and Amy Grant.

If I don’t have a theme/ song idea in mind, I first compose the tune with the chords and then fit the lyrics themed on the emotion the tune incites. If I know what I’m going to write about, the tune that comes up usually resonates with the theme, and then the lyrics are added to it. That’s about songwriting. As an artist, I most enjoy performing, then composing.

Am I fulfilled now? Absolutely! I believe when we reach a wall, we’re probably also very close to our next biggest mission. If we will only refuse to give up and walk back.

And I’m excited for what’s next.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I was first in the rigmarole with everyone else, like crabs in a basket; some get out, most are trying in vain.

But the road less traveled, which I later got on had its own set of challenges. You’ll discover them as you progress and it will take more than skill and talent to reach the goal, more being discipline, endurance, faith, and perseverance.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Earlier known for singing, my gift is songwriting. And I can write on demand, I can write a lot in a day, I can write every day.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Endurance
