Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara McNeil.
Hi Tamara, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started as a child watching my grandmother in her at-home salon at a very young age. I would always play with her mannequins until one day she asked me to do a rollerset on her. I believe I was 12 years of age at the time. From then on, I started doing everyone’s hair at the house from my grandmothers, aunts, mom, and younger sisters. I decided to go to cosmetology school back in 2011. I graduated in 2013 and moved from Connecticut to Texas. It took me about two years to build my clientele and it’s been amazing ever since!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road as I started from scratch. I didn’t know anyone here in Texas besides one person. So, I had to step out of my comfort zone and network the best way I knew how. Instagram wasn’t big back then so I passed out business cards, made random conversations with people at happy hour, and slowly built my clientele outside of social media. There were times where I had two clients for the entire week. However, I did not let that deter me.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in healthy hair care for curly girls. I love the versatility of natural hair as women or men can wear, they’re in a curly state or straighten it. I am known for my silkpresses for sure! I think what sets me apart in my business is I educate. As soon as you sit in my chair, I’m evaluating your hair and educating you on what you should or should not be doing. And then comes my personality lol! I love to make my clients feel at home. I make my clients feel like they are the only person I am seeing on that day. I never see more than one person at a time. If you asks my clients, they will tell you that I value their time and I expect the same from them
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Yes, the reason why I applied to cosmetology school in 2011 is because I was doing my mom’s hair in the living room and my uncle says “Tam, you’re crazy for not going to beauty school”. I looked at him like yea yea lol. A few days later he tragically passed away. So, I said ok Uncle Tyrone I’m listening to you, and here I am.
