Today, we’d like to introduce you to William Allen.
Hi William, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in La Marque, TX, my journey into the world of music began with a trumpet. From the moment I started playing, I fell deeply in love with the instrument. This passion led me to earn a band scholarship to attend Southern University A&M, where I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance. My career in education spanned 19 years, with 12 years as a Head Band Director and 7 years as a Head Choir Director.
In 2019, I founded The Texas Supremacy of Music & Arts Conservatory (TSMAC), a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching students about the urban performing arts, with a special emphasis on HBCU culture. My experiences playing the trumpet opened doors to the world, allowing me to see and experience things beyond my wildest dreams. This inspired me to create even greater opportunities for the students TSMAC serves, hoping that they, too, will achieve great things and return to uplift and encourage future generations.
Today, TSMAC serves over 1,500 students. My dedication to music education was recognized with a Grammy for Band Instruction in 2021 and the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. Through TSMAC, I strive to continue my mission of empowering young minds through the arts, fostering a legacy of creativity, excellence, and community.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Along the way, I’ve faced numerous adversities that tested my resolve and determination.
One significant challenge was balancing the demands of my career in education with my personal aspirations. As a Head Band Director and Head Choir Director, the responsibilities were immense, and finding time to pursue my passion for creating a nonprofit organization was tough. There were countless late nights and early mornings, but my dedication to my students and my vision for TSMAC kept me going.
Starting TSMAC in 2019 came with its own set of hurdles. Securing funding and resources for the nonprofit was a constant battle. There were moments of doubt and financial strain, but my commitment to providing students with opportunities in the performing arts pushed me to find innovative solutions and partnerships.
Another struggle was gaining recognition and support for the unique focus of TSMAC on urban performing arts and HBCU culture. It required continuous advocacy and education to convey the importance and value of this cultural emphasis to stakeholders and the community.
Despite these challenges, my passion for music and education, along with the unwavering support of my family and community, helped me persevere. Each obstacle reinforced my belief in the mission of TSMAC and the transformative power of the arts.
The journey was far from easy, but overcoming these struggles made the successes, like winning a Grammy and receiving the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, even more rewarding.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am first and foremost a trumpet player and musician. My primary passion and expertise lie in the realm of music performance, but over the years, I have expanded my focus to include the business side of music.
Currently, I partner with school districts to support and enhance their performing arts programs. Through my nonprofit organization, The Texas Supremacy of Music & Arts Conservatory (TSMAC), I work to provide students with high-quality music education and exposure to the urban performing arts, with a particular emphasis on HBCU culture.
In addition to my work with schools, I also minister in music, inspiring individuals to pursue their dreams and guiding them in turning their aspirations into reality. This involves not only teaching and mentoring but also helping them navigate the complexities of the music industry.
I am most proud of the impact TSMAC has had on the lives of over 1,500 students, providing them with opportunities to explore and excel in the performing arts. Winning a Grammy for Band Instruction in 2021 and receiving the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024 are personal milestones that reflect the dedication and hard work invested in this mission.
What sets me apart from others is my unique combination of hands-on musical expertise, business acumen, and a deep commitment to cultural education. My background as a musician who has traveled the world gives me a broad perspective, and my focus on HBCU culture and urban performing arts fills a niche that is often overlooked.
This blend of skills and experiences enables me to offer a comprehensive approach to music education and mentorship, fostering a community of empowered and talented young musicians.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One surprising fact that most people might not know about me is my deep passion for traveling and exploring different cultures. Beyond my musical pursuits, I love immersing myself in new environments, learning about local traditions, and experiencing the diverse ways people live around the world.
This curiosity has taken me to various countries, where I’ve connected with people through their food, art, and everyday life. These experiences have broadened my worldview and deeply influenced my approach to teaching and mentoring, allowing me to bring a rich, multicultural perspective to my work.
This love for travel and cultural exploration often surprises those who know me primarily through my music and educational endeavors.
