Lucas Mpili of Dallas, Texas on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Lucas Mpili. Check out our conversation below.

Good morning Lucas, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Are you walking a path—or wandering?
At AMG Records, we are walking a clear and purposeful path. Every step we take is guided by a vision—to elevate African and international artists through creativity, innovation, and global reach. Our direction is intentional: discovering talent, developing artistry, and connecting music to the world. We don’t wander—we evolve, adapt, and grow with purpose, ensuring that every move aligns with our mission to shape the future of music culture.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
At AMG Records, we are more than just a record label—we’re a creative movement dedicated to discovering, developing, and promoting unique talents across Africa and beyond. Founded with a vision to connect cultures through sound, AMG Records stands out for its commitment to authenticity, innovation, and global impact.

We specialize in artist management, music production, distribution, and brand development—helping artists turn their passion into lasting success. What makes us unique is our blend of local identity and international reach: we celebrate the diversity of African music while positioning our artists on the world stage.

Right now, we’re focused on expanding our digital presence, strengthening partnerships across West Africa and Europe, and building platforms that empower emerging artists to share their stories globally. At AMG Records, every beat tells a story—and ours is just getting started.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A defining moment for us at AMG Records was realizing how powerful music can be as a bridge between cultures. Seeing an artist from Africa connect with listeners in Europe, the Caribbean, or America—through nothing more than rhythm and emotion—completely shaped how we see the world. It reminded us that music speaks a universal language that transcends borders, languages, and backgrounds.

That experience continues to guide our vision: to create a global platform where artists from Africa and the diaspora can express themselves freely, share their culture, and inspire unity through sound. It’s not just about making hits—it’s about making history and connecting people worldwide.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
One thing we changed our mind about after failing hard was how we approached building our community online. In the beginning, we focused too much on numbers—followers, likes, and quick growth. But after facing slow progress and setbacks, we realized that true success on platforms like Instagram isn’t just about the metrics—it’s about connection, consistency, and authenticity.

We shifted our strategy from chasing trends to telling real stories, showcasing our artists, and sharing our passion for African music culture. That change completely transformed our presence. Over time, our platform grew organically, reaching hundreds of thousands of followers and catching the attention of powerful artists and industry leaders across the globe.

That journey taught us a valuable lesson: failure is not the end—it’s feedback. By staying authentic and focusing on our mission, we turned setbacks into growth and built a brand that now stands as a respected voice for music and culture worldwide.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the music industry tells itself is that talent alone is enough. The truth is, success in music today requires more than just raw talent—it takes strategy, consistency, branding, and the right team behind you. Many artists believe that once their song goes viral, their career is set. But without structure, vision, and long-term planning, that moment fades quickly.

Another lie is that independent labels can’t compete with major ones. At AMG Records, we’ve proven that with creativity, digital innovation, and genuine artist development, independent labels can have a global impact. We’ve built relationships with respected artists and audiences worldwide—not because we followed the system, but because we believed in authenticity over hype.

The industry often chases trends, but we’ve learned that timeless music and real connection outlast everything. That’s the truth we stand by.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. When have you had to bet the company?
We had to bet the company when we decided to fully invest in building our digital presence and artist development platform from the ground up. At that time, it was a huge risk—resources were limited, and the digital music landscape was already crowded. But we believed that authentic storytelling and consistency would set us apart.

We poured everything into growing AMG Records’ online brand, especially on Instagram, where we started with almost nothing and grew into a recognized platform followed by major artists and industry names across the world. That move was a turning point—it transformed AMG Records from a local label into a respected voice in the global Afrobeat and urban music scene.

It was a gamble driven by faith and vision, but it proved that when you believe in your purpose and back it with hard work, bold moves can redefine your entire future.
