Today we’d like to introduce you to Lea Coil.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
After college graduation my first job was laying out ads for Printing Inc in Oklahoma City, then I moved on up to laying out the News and advertising of the Journal Record newspaper, then I got a job being the lead designer and art director of Hard Edge Design. From there, I joined an ad agency and was responsible for working with some major clients. It wasn’t too long after that I started moonlighting taking on side clients (friends, family members) who blossomed into enough work that I had to quit my day job and become a freelancer. From there, I never looked back.
Since I made the leap and struck out on my own, I’ve had the honor and delight to work with 100+ companies, from bootstrapped entrepreneurs to huge institutions. I have gotten my hands and creative juices into print design, branding logo design, web design, and so much more. Some have called me a “one stop shop” freelance graphic designer. And if I can’t do it for you directly, I can hook you up with a quality person who can.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I started working freelance in 2000. I have definitely had a few bumps in the road along the way. For the first few years I would hit a few slow times and start to worry, but even in the hardest time’s things would somehow work out and something would fall in my lap and push me through. I am very blessed to get to be creative on a daily basis and make a career out of something I have such a passion for.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Music was and still is a big part of my life. When I was 14 my two younger sisters and I put on a music video for my parents. We were lucky enough to grow up with a jukebox and dance floor in our built in garage. My mother had a huge music collection and filled the jukebox with all her favorites from the 70’s all the way up when she was young. My sisters and I would invite friends after school to come to our house and dance until total exhaustion. I remember a few times we would go outside and fall backward into the snow and just lay there to cool off.
At the time we decided to make a video we were very much into disco so we performed to the Gloria Gaynor song, I will Survive. My dad had a video camera so he recorded everything, including lots of silly things happening before and after. To this day I still get a kick out of watching it seeing how much we have changed through the years.
