Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaron Embrey.
Aaron, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I actually started my career as a graphic designer and art director, and for a long time, photography was just a creative outlet and hobby.
Even though I’d been doing photography projects for years, I never really considered myself a “professional” photographer until somewhere around 2008-ish.
That’s around the time when I (first) quit my day job to start my (first) photography business. Within a year I was managing another corporate creative department from another comfy corporate cubicle.
To make a long(-ish) story short(-ish), I’ll skip ahead to the cool part where I quit my comfy corporate day job (again) to start my photography business (again!).
Now, I know that I can’t NOT take photos—for myself, for others, for work, for art. For life.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hmm, mostly. It’s been a lot smoother this time around, for sure.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s scary to start something new, and it’s crazy scary to leave behind a comfy corporate cubicle with great people and a great regular paycheck and all that great stuff, for the great unknown of the open road… Especially when it’s similar to a road I failed to navigate very well in the past…
I guess it’s a classic cheesy-thing to say, but I know that bumpy road led me here. I wouldn’t be who I am without it and its lessons. So, I guess obstacles are part of the process, right?
I did my best, then, and right now, I’m just doing my best to keep learning as I go and stay focused on making and sharing more of the things that matter—to me, to others, to work, to art, to life.
Bent Barn Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Bent Barn Studio is a photography studio and creative space for making things and growing new ideas.
As a photographer, I specialize in natural light and low light photography in natural spaces for natural people and brands.
As a creative coach, I help small businesses owners create change and grow big ideas in a holistic way.
Bent Barn Studio also hosts hands-on workshops on developing creative courage and processes.
I guess what sets me and my business apart from others is probably me as a person—my unique perspective, experiences, and experience, added to an amazing working relationship with my Mom, along with who she is as a person—her unique perspective, experiences, and experience…
It’d be difficult, at best, to replicate our creative results. 🙂
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I’m not sure there’s a single moment for me.
I love having flexibility in my days and weeks and being able to work with my Mom. I love our creative space, here, and I love that my Dad built that old barn.
Being able to guide people through that creative process, from having nothing, at first—sometimes not even an idea—to eventually, having *something*, like a photo that captures the soul or essence of them or their brand—that’s what I love to do.
Sometimes, it’s something small, but sometimes, it’s sort of magic.
