Meet Abby Siackasone of ColourTress Hair Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Siackasone.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Dallas in 2009 and I started working full time as a hair stylist. When I was in my early years of cosmetology, I thought traveling and living in different cities and states is what I wanted to do. But as time passed and I got older, I realized that it was time to settle down and build a clientele and get serious with my career. I was blessed with the opportunity to work with a phenomenal mentor and stylist. She definitely helped me find my roots here in Dallas, TX. I’m forever grateful for her. I never thought Dallas was where I was going to be living but I’m glad I’m here. My success definitely did not come over night. After a few rough patches and a long journey, I can definitely say I’m at a good successful place in my career. Stay positive, be patient, work hard, put in the time that’s needed and be willing to take advice and criticism. Don’t be afraid of failure. And practice practice practice. Skills doesn’t come without work. Those are the keys to a successful career.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has had its rough times. Starting off as a stylist you have to build your clientele. People don’t tell you that It’s not that easy as a new stylist. Either a new stylist just getting out of school or a new stylist moving in from another city or state. In the beginning, it’s a lot of marketing. So much marketing on social media, out at the mall, at stores, or even word of mouth and just however you can get your name out. I worked so hard at the salon I was at. So loyal. But sometimes you can’t expect the same treatment back. After working at salons, you realize you want more than just being a stylist on the salons schedule. I wanted freedom and flexibility. But still wanted to make money. After working at my last salon, I knew I wanted to work for myself. Be my own boss. That transition was so hard. I didn’t want to leave my lady boss but I knew I couldn’t stay. I saved every penny I made and went out and started my own business in a salon suite. But once I moved to a whole different side of town, I definitely lost more than half of my clients due to complications. I struggled so much in the first year of business. Starting over having to put my name out there was hard. Nobody knew of me and my work. But I worked hard patiently until my clientele grew. I worked as a bartender / waitress when I wasn’t at the salon. (Another great way to market) Then eventually one day my name was out there floating around Plano, TX. I couldn’t believe all the kind reviews I had from all my clients. Then people started to find me on social media. And what can I say? I’m grateful for where I’m at in life today. Definitely hard work and being patience worked after all. Stay positive!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have always had the niche for beauty. Growing up, I was the girl who had to do so much to my hair since it was curly and not very common in the Asian community. I was known as the queen of hair spray since I had to tame the frizz and curls. My favorite childhood memories was when I was able to get my hair straighten. I was a teenage girl that was envious of everyone else’s straight hair. So, before the straightening iron came out, my cousin would straighten my hair with a clothes iron and board. I would flip my hair over hoping and praying I wouldn’t get burnt. Lol.

Then I would never have wanted to wash my hair. But eventually I did. And it was back to my natural hair. Oh, how the beauty industry is always evolving and awesome.
