Today we’d like to introduce you to Major Mottla.
Major, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, art and design has always been integrated into my everyday life ever since I was a kid. My father is an architect and my mother is an interior designer so growing up in that creative household definitely had an effect on who I am today. My interest for art always remained a constant in my upbringing just in different mediums; anywhere from leatherwork to painting. Up until 7th grade I had to wear a uniform to school everyday so I never got to experiment with clothes until I entered public school. I found a new form of art whether I was conscious of it or not at the time, but putting together a good outfit had the same satisfaction of finishing a good painting. Throughout high school fashion was my new interest and passion, I learned more about everything including the process of how to make my own clothes.
Through my right hand man Dakota Strickland he then introduced me to our screen printers and allowed me to successfully put my designs on clothes for the first time ever in my life, and it was extremely gratifying. I dropped a couple designs in those years and sold them successfully around my school and city. As of this past year we took time to study more than just fashion design we have studied creating spaces, furniture design, sculpture, painting and more and since then we have made revolutionary bags, sweaters furniture and sculptures. My dad through his architecture taught me the importance of planning, attention to detail and the level of precision that must go into a quality project. This “concept to completion” approach to design has carried over into my creative world with all of my artistic endeavors. I have tried to maintain the same quality into my work that my dad displayed and instilled into me from an early age.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yeah I would say so, there’s always ups and downs that’s just life you know, but you can’t recognize one without the other.
Please tell us about ABCD Productions (A Behind Closed Doors Production).
The work we are currently producing is searching for the commonalities in the fields of fashion design, furniture design, sculpture, painting and more – allowing them to all live seamlessly in one installation.
Most of our work’s central concepts are playful and childlike. We like to incorporate Pop Art themes, 20th century Avant-garde and Dali surrealism while still demonstrating and displaying a new untouched area of art. These pieces are so monumental and important to me because these concepts have never been done before. Alongside all of our pieces, our installations would be accompanied by paintings, film, fashion, furniture – creating a fully immersive experience for the viewer.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Just the bliss that came with being a child, never worrying about anyone or anything, just doing you. Living freely and yourself. I try to get back in that headpsace a lot.
