Today we’d like to introduce you to Abhi Mane BVetMed, MRCVS, DVM.
Abhi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My journey to being a veterinarian began long ago when I was a child. When I was 8 years old, I clearly remember raising a variety of pets, which I collected throughout my childhood. In college, my focus was to pursue a career in medicine, specifically veterinary medicine. I went against my family’s hopes of becoming a human doctor or an engineer and followed my own dreams. I was fortunate to attend the second oldest, and the world’s third best ranked veterinary college; The Royal Veterinary College in London, England. While abroad, I had the opportunity to work at various veterinary hospitals and farms around the world, including a few formerly frequented by James Herriot.
Afterwards, I moved back to the United States and began my career in Shreveport, Louisiana as a small animal veterinarian. Here, I gained a tremendous amount of experience in internal medicine and a large variety of surgical procedures. Afterwards, my family and I moved back to the DFW area, which we call home. Here I have worked as a relief veterinarian for a handful of local small animal hospitals and at a local emergency and critical care facility, which taught me a lot about triage and strengthened my surgical skills.
As of December 1, 2017, I am the proud owner and medical director of Cross Timbers Veterinary Center & Boarding Facility in McKinney, Texas. From the first day after graduating from veterinary college, I have been dreaming about managing and running my own business. Currently, I manage a staff of over 22 employees and practice in a 9500 square foot facility. My journey has been incredible, as I have had the opportunity to learn from some amazing veterinarians over the span of the past 10 years. I am truly blessed to be part of an amazing group of pet advocates known as veterinarians.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey was not without struggles. While in veterinary college in London, I had to learn to live on my own in a strange country without any family or friends. I had a difficult time adjusting to the British methods of testing, which was very different than the norm in the United States. I was unfortunate to contract meningococcal septicemia during my third year and missed an entire 6 months of studies, causing me to have to take a whole year off from veterinary college. All of these setbacks only made the entire experience more memorable and my journey more worthwhile.
Cross Timbers Veterinary Center & Boarding Facility – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is called Cross Timbers Veterinary Center & Boarding Facility. We take pride in offering top-notch veterinary medicine and surgery for all pets. We have a staff of 23 employees who contribute to the success of the hospital and the boarding facility. Our doctors are all experienced in internal medicine and emergency medicine. I have a strong interest in soft tissue surgery, dental surgery, allergy & dermatology, and regenerative medicine (stem-cell therapy). Our full-service facility is known for the honest veterinary care at a reasonable cost and a family-friendly environment.
I take pride in knowing that a large amount of our staff has been with our hospital for anywhere from 3-15 years. I find great satisfaction knowing that many customers drive a long distance to see us.
We set ourselves apart from other veterinary hospitals by offering progressive and honest medical and surgical care for pets 7 days a week. We have several specialists perform services for our patients on site for the convenience of the customer.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is directly proportional to satisfaction of its customers and employees. If a business can manage to fulfill their needs and wants, then the rest will fall into place.
