Meet Adarius Jones of Drew Skyland in North

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adarius Jones.

Adarius, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I feel like the clothes from our history was just as significant as the historical event that occurred at the time. I believe that we should appreciate the majority and the minority for the golden road that they paved for us, the one that had led us to today. Because of this, I feel very strongly attached to the vintage appeal. I believe that the average working individual looks classy, sexy, and modern. The vintage people showed expression, their emotion, their sex appeal through the way they dressed, and all while honoring their origins. I dedicate my work to styling vintage pieces with my poetry to educate people about what history truly should have been. I give thanks to Ella Fitzgerald, Audrey Hepburn, and so many more inspirational figures that absolutely altered history. I personally identify as a minority, queer, and feminine unsocial and I find it hard to represent that in current times. However, the clothes of “Vintage” times were very neutral and people thought of clothes and the mind as one. I idolize “Attack of the 50ft Woman” because the movie signified a woman in a lead role that was in a position of not being the victim, but rather that she dominated the world, all while maintaining her beauty. I’ve come to learn that one can still look beautiful, conquer the world, and have an individual voice in what you are wearing and representing. If you go back in time, you can see from labor unions (the 1910’s) to the Civil Rights Movement (the 1960’s). One can actually see the power and emotion behind what they were wearing during these times of hardship. I thank God so much for making me a unique individual, and I hope to inspire, conquer, and be beautiful just as my idols were in the 1900s.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My family dynamics were not the best. People find my style “odd” or “out there” because I am a feminine, black man. I still continue to love, grow, and appreciate everyone that I have encountered because it morphed me into the person I am today. I have setbacks and obstacles throughout my entire life, but I did not let that stop me. Vintage fashion was a gateway for me to express issues of the past and current times and hope to see the change in the future.

Please tell us about Drew Skyland.
Drew Skyland is social issues meets vintage fashion. I specialize in styling vintage clothes to express a voice for the minorities and people that were looked down upon for being different in the 1900s. I am known for empowerment, individuality, and body acceptance.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory was over a period of time. I would like to give thanks to all the beautiful women that I have encountered. They saw something special in me even though I couldn’t understand what they meant. I finally know now that I am ready to change perspectives about life, beauty, and history through fashion.
