Today we’d like to introduce you to Adri Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Adri. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up with flowers, particularly around my mother’s garden. I distinctly remember taking in the sweet smell of the large iris blooms that grew in her garden each spring. I loved flowers, but I never thought that I could make a living working with them. So I was became a teacher and taught for 7 years. But deep inside I knew that I was meant to be something else. It was when I became close friends with my wedding florist that I thought that I may actually want to work with flowers. I started my business knowing nothing about the floral business, or even the wedding industry for that matter. But my impulsive nature did not let that stop me! I built my floral design business and continued to teach for three years, and then about two years ago, things really started to take off! I was able to stop teaching in the public school setting, however, I love teaching floral design, and hope to provide more floral workshops this coming year! Owning my own business has been a roller coaster– it’s taken me on a wild ride that is both exhilarating and fearful at times. But I absolutely love it, and hope to continue to grow as a designer as long as I am able to.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely not! I’ve had to face my biggest fears with this career. Putting myself out there- both as an artist and as a business owner is the most challenging. I do not come from an art background, so I have had to learn elements of design along the way. I can definitely be my worst critic when it comes to critiquing my designs. I am also an introvert, so having to attend networking events to get the word out about my business can be very frightening! I usually avoid them, and try to let my flowers do the talking via social media.
Please tell us about Moss Floral Design.
Moss Floral is a floral design studio that specializes in wedding florals. We want our designs to be unique, thoughtfully constructed, and have unique floral elements that aren’t overly used in the DFW area. I love researching unique flowers, foliage, and color palettes that my clients may not have thought of, but that will refine their aesthetic while maintaining what they’ve envisioned. We try to focus our brand on an artfully-minded aesthetic, thoughtful color palettes, and seasonally-based designs. This is what I think sets us apart from other local florists in the industry. I also have a cutting garden, and am planting some carefully curated bulbs and seeds of flowers that I couldn’t get enough of last year, and would pay an arm and a leg in shipping to receive at my doorstep. That is something else that separates us from other designer– we will go above and beyond to get that special flower that is perfect for our client’s palette and that will take their arrangement to a different level!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have put together a business plan!! And have an end-goal in mind.
