Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Neely.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was originally convinced to come to Dallas for grad school at SMU by my girlfriend, now wife, Michelle. I finished my coursework and started working in commercial production, in various capacities, in and around Dallas. In 2008, I took a job teaching radio, television, and film at the collegiate level. Every once in a while, I would dip my toe back into production, but it was nothing major. In 2015 I met a group of creatives who were doing various projects and offered to help out on their projects. Since then, I’ve worked on several projects, including working as the director of photography for a television pilot created by a local director with several faith-based projects in distribution. I’m hoping to work on more projects like that now.
Has it been a smooth road?
I wouldn’t say it’s been smooth. I have a family. Sometimes, projects can keep me away for several hours. I also still teach at the collegiate level. I just started at a new institution this year. I’ve been trying to increase my profile in order to work on a different tier of projects. I’ve worked on a lot of projects where I’m providing the camera, lights, sound, etc. I’d like to work on more things where I can concentrate on the cinematography. I’m still learning and growing. There are so many people doing what I’m trying to do. I’m constantly looking for ways to differentiate myself; to stand out.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
With the circle I’ve found myself in most recently, I’ve been acting as director of photography. I like to push myself visually. I’m trying to do things that aren’t run of the mill. I’m proud any time I see growth or do something that surprises me. I’d like to believe I’m easy to work with and adaptable.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
There’s been a democratization in content creation. Equipment is cheaper and, therefore, more people are doing it. Those of us who want to be successful, have to be aware of where people will interact with what we produce.
