Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Reed.
Adrian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started producing in 2011 on a website DAW (digital audio workstation) called audiotool. I started producing hip hop with some friends in high school in 2012. We would produce on MacBooks in the computer room and record tracks on the garage band. In 2013 I took a hiatus from music and went to college. I came home after the first year and started working full time while picking up FL studio. Shortly thereafter, in 2014, I joined the U.S. Army. Once I came home from basic training, I picked up production again seriously. The project is geared toward future beats and electronic music.
From there, it was nothing but up. I spent the first year and a half learning the ins and outs of producing on an industry level. I started releasing music and started DJing under the moniker “capshun” in 2016 and it’s been up from there. I had my first big break with a release with Phuture Collective in 2017. I started my own record label called Bonsai Collective, which now bolsters a roster of 12, including the management team and artists. Since then, I’ve released on labels like Sable Valley (LA), Phuture Collective (portland), Quality Goods Records (LA) and many others. I’ve played shows in California, New York, Chicago and all over Texas. My first debut in Los Angeles, CA, was with Brownies and Lemonade. And I’ve played other shows for Electric Hawk and Sable Valley and with the roster of Bonsai Collective.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road hasn’t been the worst. The biggest struggles I came across were in the beginning. Trying to break into the industry as a new artist is not easy when there are thousands of other artists doing the same thing. And researching the industry seemed like jumping into a black hole of information. Finding a mentor to teach me how the industry worked along the way was the only that gave me the chance to make the progress that I have. Shoutout out Michael, the founder of Phuture Collective, who taught me everything I know business-wise and help me make it this far!
We’d love to hear more about your work.
Capshun is a DJ/Producer who specializes in Electronic Music. I feel like I am known for creating vast landscapes and scenery in my music, regardless if it’s a chill song or a straight trap banger. I am most proud of being able to give back to the community in my own way. With all of the success, I have had, I don’t think I would feel the same about the industry if I had not made the friends I have and been able to pay forward all of the help that I have been able to give. As well as giving my listeners a place to escape and vibe to. I think the biggest thing that sets me apart from other artists is my will to always do what I love to do rather than follow trends. I feel like a lot of people respect my genuine love for the music.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a fun kid. Really goofy and sporadic. I have always been interested in music. As a kid, my dad spun records at our home and let me practice with him. I danced competitively in high school and was in the church choir. So I have been surrounded by music my whole life.
