Today we’d like to introduce you to Adriana Morales.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Adriana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my career in culinary arts in 2002. I realized I needed a change, and as I began to look at different options, I happened upon massage therapy. I enrolled in massage school in mid-2012 and graduated in 2013.
I loved every aspect of school and my new career choice. Well-being became part of my daily routine as I fully embraced the massage therapist lifestyle. I began working at the spa attached to my massage school. My passion for helping other people started to flourish the more I was exposed to the massage field. When I felt it was time to move on from the spa setting, I decided to venture on my own and open Transcend Relaxation Massage & Bodyworks Studio in 2014.
My goal at the time was to help people connect to their bodies by blending therapeutic massage with a relaxing experience. My knowledge has expanded as I’ve taken courses on various modalities, applying what has proven effective, and discarding what was not. To expand my knowledge, I have traveled to Costa Rica, London, and various states within the USA, all thanks to massage therapy. I’m continuously challenging myself to provide the most effective therapeutic sessions to my clients. By blending Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy, Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Thai Massage, and Body Mind Coaching, I can provide a powerful combination, which addresses the physical and emotional aspects of pain.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has not been smooth at all! When I decided to venture out on my own, I had no previous business experience. In the beginning, I believed the saying, “If you build it, they will come.” would produce magical results. That was the farthest thing from the truth. It was a hard lesson learning that pouring my heart and soul onto a massage session and getting praise from the person receiving the massage didn’t necessarily equate to a successful, profitable business. Sadly, the business course included in my massage training did not prepare me to be a small business owner, or even an independent contractor for that matter.
Six months after opening my doors, I was forced to close. I had run out of money and the clientele I had built was not sustaining my lease. I was devastated. I gave myself a little weekend pity party after vacating the business premises. I went back to the spa I had worked at before my venture, with a clear goal to reopen my business in the near future. After collecting my thoughts and setting the course of action, I opted to work at the spa to cover my expenses, while working to build my clientele in the evenings and on the weekends. I was also determined to learn everything I could about the business/entrepreneurship/mind shift in whatever “free” time I had. This was an amazing time of personal growth. It took me about a year and a half to do full transition back to owning my own practice. The time that I have invested in my business has been paying off. I’m sure there are more obstacles ahead, but I have learned so much about my capabilities.
Transcend Relaxation Massage & Bodyworks Studio – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Transcend Relaxation Massage and Bodywork Studio specializes in a holistic approach to the emotional aspect of chronic pain through Body Mind Coaching, meditation, breathing techniques, and therapeutic massage. We often live disconnected from our bodies in a fast-paced lifestyle where pain must be managed quickly with a pill. Being busy is glorified, and suppressing feelings is better than appearing vulnerable. Stress is constant and we don’t often know how to manage it effectively. Massage therapy is great as a stand-alone service, but to address more effectively the issues we face in our day to day lives, we need an integrative and holistic approach.
At my studio, I bridge those gaps and guide clients to start listening to their bodies, and to understand the language of the body. Before the hands-on session, I discuss the goal(s) and expectations the client has, and then determine the appropriate tailored session. A single session may consist of Body-Mind coaching, a brief grounding/breathing meditation before their manual lymphatic drainage, and may end with a sound bath meditation using Tibetan singing bowls. I also map out the frequency of subsequent sessions to get the client out of discomfort/imbalance, and end with a discussion on future maintenance sessions.
What I’m most proud of is the results my clients get from this approach. One client told me after only one session that she felt truly hopeful. Among the most common ailments clients come for are inflammation, pre and post-surgery manual lymphatic drainage, pain and stress management, migraines, postural issues (neck, shoulder, lower back, sacrum, knees imbalances) and emotional support.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success as balance, fulfillment, and financial freedom. Doing what I love while having a balanced personal, professional, emotional, and spiritual life is absolutely my top priority
