Meet Aisha Meeks of The Pit Fitness and Rehab in Desoto

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aisha Meeks.

Aisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I have always worked in the medical field since I was 18 years old in several different capacities. My early dreams included being a psychiatrist but becoming a teenage mom at the age of 15 did change my plans a little bit. I was a mom and a wife by the age of 16 years old. I was able to stay focused in my studies and still went on to graduate from high school at the age of 16. After high school, I decided to take up a trade. I decided to enter the medical field as a phlebotomist and from there came to discover several different careers within the medical field. By the time I was 20 I was separated and a single mom. I went on to pursue various different degrees and work in many capacities and areas in the medical field while still pursuing more courses and degrees as my interest grew and I worked. I have worked in labs, surgical units, hospitals, long term care facilities, pain management clinics, and physical therapy clinics.

As I grew I if I decided there was something I wanted to try then I would. All of that led me to where I am today. Dr. Aisha Meeks (Physical Exercise and Human Nutrition). I am the owner of The Pit Fitness & Rehab, The Pit Event Space ( Perfect space for events of 80 people and under) and The Pit Wellness Clinic. Through all of the various positions, I just discovered that I wanted and had a desire to help people from a wellness aspect first where we focus first on getting the body healthy and then focus on the outside appearance of what each individual wants their body to look like. I am on a mission to change the mindset that fitness just has to look one way from an outward body approach but to know that fitness, health, and wellness all go together and just like in life the value starts inside from the heart. If I had to summarize I would say my love and passion for people and the pure joy it brings me watching them accomplish their goals is what got me here.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have had quite a few obstacles. I suffered from depression in my 20’s but not knowing at the time it was depression because as long as we can quote on quote function in our normal routines, then things will just be fine when in reality we begin to bury hurt and pain and they show up in different ways in our lives. In my 20’s I had a weight gain that took me from about 185 lbs to my heaviest of 378 lbs by the time I was in my 30’s. All while I was still functioning and still advancing but still empty. One not so healthy relationship after another trying to fill voids and using food as my best friend along the way.

By the time I had my son at the age of 32 I had developed high blood pressure and was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and instead of allowing them to put me on medication I decided to make a change and that change would be a great one because I lost over 150 lbs but it would not be long lasting and I didn’t gain it all back but I did go up and down simply because I never addressed the pain in my heart that caused the depression.

After initially opening my business I almost went bankrupt after being tied in with a crooked business partner but I survived it, Right after that my mom was diagnosed with cancer and I became her primary caretaker. A few months later my maternal grandmother gained her heavenly wings, six months after that my mother gained her heavenly wings and two months after that my fraternal grandmother gained her heavenly wings. All of this is happening and the depression comes back but I’m still functioning and the weight begins to go up and down again.

Today I am back and healthy and helping others understand grief, depression and emotional eating and how to recognize the triggers so that they can remain in control and know its ok to say when you are not ok and that you just need the correct tools to control those emotions.
