Meet Albie Robles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Albie Robles.

Hi Albie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I didn’t pursue voiceover until I was forty years old. I’d done acting in plays and one BBC production when I was much younger, but once I had kids, it seemed like it would be harder to commit to setting aside time for rehearsals, auditions, etc.

When a coworker mentioned that I should go into voicework, it felt like something clicked. I pursued voiceover ferociously. I tirelessly consumed every resource I could find. Podcasts, articles, social media groups. I asked questions and read questions asked by others. I paid close attention to every answer.

Little by little, I acquired gear, improved my recording space, and worked on my audio engineering skills. Once I made some money doing voiceover, I paid for training one on one with a voiceover coach and also had a demo made.

I never stopped trying to improve. I still haven’t

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Most of voiceover work is trying to find the work. You’re a contractor. There are peaks and valleys in how much work you get. When there is a while between jobs, there is definitely a lot of self-doubt and imposter syndrome that you have to push through.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I provide voiceover for just about anything. Corporate training, audiobooks, animation, video games, and film. I definitely enjoy character work the most, and I’d have to say that my specialty is playing villains.

The best-known production I’ve worked on would have to be a very popular anime called One Piece.

As far as what sets me apart from others? I guess it’s that my voice is my own. I don’t try to do impersonations or imitate anyone. I simply focus on what a character wants. I follow direction to make sure to be polite to anyone I work with.

No matter what the job is, I do it with enthusiasm.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up.
I don’t know if it’s a specific memory, but I am fond of getting to spend time with my family. Dinners, holidays, etc. There is so much fondness for the feeling of everyone being together.
