Meet Aleaya Bradley of Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleaya Bradley.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started long before I ever stepped into a classroom or newsroom. I’ve always been passionate about storytelling — the kind that informs, uplifts, and connects people. I began my career as a news producer and writer, driven by a love for sharing stories that matter and giving a voice to communities that are often overlooked.

Over time, I realized my calling was bigger than just producing stories, it was about building storytellers. That led me to higher education, where I now serve as a professor and Student Media Lab Manager. I get to guide the next generation of journalists, creators, and communicators, helping them find their voices, refine their skills, and tell impactful stories across digital and traditional media platforms.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped me into who I am today. Transitioning from the newsroom to academia came with a learning curve, I had to shift from the fast-paced rhythm of breaking news to the intentional pace of teaching and mentoring. There were moments of self-doubt, especially as I worked toward my doctorate while balancing work and life responsibilities.

There were times when I questioned whether I was on the right path, but those seasons of uncertainty always led to growth. Each obstacle helped me build empathy, patience, and perspective, qualities I now bring into every classroom, project, and conversation.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an educator and storyteller, and I’m proud to merge both in the work I do every day. I currently serve as a Student Media Lab Manager and adjunct professor, where I oversee student-run media platforms, guide student journalists, and help them gain hands-on experience in storytelling across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.

My background as a news producer and writer taught me how powerful stories can be when they’re told with truth and heart. Now, I specialize in helping students find that same power by training them not only in the technical side of journalism and media production but also in how to tell stories that make an impact and serve their communities.

What I’m most proud of is watching students grow into confident storytellers. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them light up when they realize their voices matter and to know that I played a small part in helping them get there.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always curious and creative. I loved to read, write, and ask questions, anything that let me learn about people and the world around me. I was the kid who wanted to know everyone’s story, whether it was through books, family conversations, or just observing life around me.

I also had a strong sense of leadership and community even as a child. I was the one organizing my friends for school projects, starting little clubs, or putting on shows for family members. Looking back, those early experiences were really the foundation of my love for storytelling and teaching.

I was also very empathetic. If someone was hurting, I noticed. If someone had a win, I celebrated with them. That sensitivity shaped not just my career in journalism and education but also the way I try to connect with and support the people I work with today.
