Meet Aleq Slimp of Studio 313

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aleq Slimp.

Hi Aleq, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
For as long as I can remember I’ve loved the art of capturing fleeting moments, but I picked up my first camera in high school just for fun and started taking portraits of my close friends. It never evolved into more than a hobby until I had my first son in 2020. I was a new mom on an 8 week maternity leave dreading the return to a 9-5 position at a dental office. I couldn’t fathom the thought of being away from my son everyday, so my husband told me verbatim “start your photography business. Just do it. Put your two weeks in and do it.” So that’s what I did. I give credit to my husband for giving me the opportunity to pursue a passion over a paycheck.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To be completely honest, it’s been the smoothest road I’ve traveled in my life. The only struggle I’ve encountered along the way is with myself and believing that I deserve to be in the position that I am. I think they would label that as “imposter syndrome”.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Studio 313 is a natural light photography studio in a quaint town west of Fort Worth.

It’s located inside a 100-year-old building in the heart of downtown Lipan. That alone sold me on the space, but the inside was an absolute dream. The building also happened to be part of my husband’s family history; his great-uncle used the space as a meat market long ago.

I wanted a space that matched my personal style of photography.
Earthy, neutral, old, with a sprinkle of western.

What sets the studio apart from others is the building itself. If I left it bare, it would still be beautiful. The decor is just an extra bonus.

I would like readers to know that Studio 313 is worth the drive.

You can rent it by the hour for your next photoshoot. Bring your own photographer or hire the owner (me)!

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I would say Instagram is my biggest resource when it comes to photography. I follow a lot of fellow photographers and studios that keep me inspired.
