Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Shtutman.
Hi Alex, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up in Rockland County, New York, I originally went down a completely different career path. I went to school to become a Physical Therapist Assistant and eventually started practicing in the field. At the same time, I had a side business reselling luxury goods, which slowly started gaining traction. What began as a side hustle eventually turned into a full-time business, and I made the decision to step away from physical therapy and focus entirely on reselling.
At the time, most of my business was built through Instagram. It was where I connected with clients, marketed products, and essentially ran my entire operation. Then one day, my Instagram page was suddenly shut down, and overnight my business collapsed. I lost access to the audience and customer base I had spent years building. Looking back, I realized I had made the mistake of relying too heavily on a third-party platform instead of creating something I truly owned, like a website or independent brand presence.
That period was one of the biggest setbacks of my life, both mentally and financially. I went from running a successful business to feeling like I had nothing. I was able to hold onto a small portion of my clientele, but I knew I had to reinvent myself and start over.
That experience pushed me into tech. I began building tools for resellers and the retail industry, combining my firsthand experience in the space with technology and problem-solving. During my years in reselling, I also noticed a major gap in the authentication industry. Authentication services had existed for years, but I felt there was an opportunity to create something better — more accurate, more customer-focused, and more trustworthy.
That’s ultimately how Authentic Detective was born. What started from a major setback turned into an opportunity to build something with real value and long-term vision.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a consistently smooth journey. Building a business in a customer service–driven industry comes with constant challenges, especially in the beginning when you are trying to establish trust and credibility. Early on, I wore every hat in the company — customer support, operations, marketing, tech, and business development — so there were a lot of long days and sleepless nights trying to keep everything moving.
One of the biggest challenges was learning how to scale while still maintaining a high level of personal attention for every client. In authentication, people are trusting you with expensive items and important purchasing decisions, so accuracy and communication are everything. We had to build trust one customer at a time, and that takes patience and consistency.
There were also challenges that came from transitioning industries. Coming from reselling into tech and building a company from the ground up meant I had to learn a completely new skill set very quickly. There was a lot of trial and error, setbacks, and moments where things did not go as planned. But honestly, those experiences ended up shaping the business into what it is today.
I think one of the biggest lessons I learned is that setbacks are unavoidable in entrepreneurship. The key is being able to adapt, stay persistent, and continue moving forward even when things feel uncertain.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Authentic Detective?
Authentic Detective was created to bring a higher level of trust, accuracy, and customer experience to the authentication industry. We specialize in authenticating luxury goods, collectibles, and high-value items, helping buyers and sellers make confident decisions in a market where counterfeits have become more sophisticated than ever.
What really sets us apart is that we built the company from firsthand experience in the resale industry. I was a reseller myself for years, so I understand the challenges customers face because I lived them personally. I know how important fast communication, reliability, and accuracy are when people are spending significant amounts of money or running businesses of their own. A lot of authentication services can feel impersonal or transactional, but from day one we wanted Authentic Detective to feel different — more transparent, more responsive, and more community-driven.
We also approach the business with a technology-first mindset. Beyond authentication itself, we are constantly looking for ways to improve the customer experience through better systems, tools, and innovation within the resale and retail space. We believe the industry is evolving quickly, and companies need to evolve with it.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is the trust we’ve been able to build with our clients and community. In this industry, reputation is everything. People are trusting us with expensive items, important purchases, and sometimes even their livelihoods. Knowing that customers continue to come back and recommend us to others means a lot because it shows we are doing things the right way.
More than anything, I want readers to know that Authentic Detective was built from resilience and real experience. It came from understanding the gaps in the industry and wanting to create a better solution — one focused not just on authentication, but on genuinely helping people navigate the resale world with confidence.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I would not be where I am today without the people around me. Entrepreneurship can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be very lonely, and having the right support system makes all the difference.
First and foremost, I have to thank my wife. She has been there through the long nights, the stress, the uncertainty, and the countless hours of me sitting in front of a screen building and growing the business. When you are building something from the ground up, it often consumes your life, and having someone who understands and supports that journey is priceless. My 3-year-old deserves some credit too — mostly for keeping me humble, reminding me to take breaks, and proving daily that negotiating with toddlers might actually be the best business training out there.
I also owe a huge amount of gratitude to my family. Making the decision to walk away from physical therapy and pursue entrepreneurship full time was not an easy or traditional path. That conversation could have gone very differently, but instead of discouraging me, they supported me and believed in what I was trying to build even when things were uncertain.
I especially want to recognize our authentication team — they are truly irreplaceable and the stars of the show. In an industry where trust, precision, and consistency matter so much, having a loyal and dedicated team is everything. They have played a massive role in the success and reputation of Authentic Detective, and over time, many of them have become some of my closest friends. I genuinely owe a lot to them.
A special thank you goes to my lifelong friend, Craig, who has been someone I could rely on at all hours of the night — whether it was problem solving, brainstorming, or helping navigate critical moments while building the business. Having people like that in your corner through both the highs and lows is something I never take for granted.
