Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Conomos.
So, before we jump into specific questions about what you do, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I enjoyed my career as a broadcast journalist for two decades working for legacy station WFAA-TV Channel 8/ABC in Dallas-Fort Worth, sister station Texas Cable News, and the NBC affiliate in Palm Springs, CA. For 19 of those 20 years, I awoke at 3 am to be a part of the morning news team. As a mother of three children and the wife of a busy restauranteur (who’s also a lawyer!), it was time to hang up the alarm clock and seek a more forgiving schedule. Ultimately, like so many others, I sought a second wind. A “Chapter 2” that would allow me to be my own boss, to run my own schedule, and to ultimately be a more rested, mentally present mom and wife. So, as I was finishing my final year in the local TV news business, I did something I haven’t done since college: I studied for a major test – the national and Texas real estate exam. Just months before my retirement, I earned my Texas real estate license and then created my own residential real estate boutique brand: Anderson Conomos Team. Brokered through Keller Williams Urban Dallas, I serve clients throughout the Metroplex and utilize my broadcast skills to produce video vignettes that tell the story of the homes I sell. It’s been an awesome way to blend my former career with my new one. And along the way, I discovered that there’s still time to flex my multimedia muscles. So, I also enjoy anchoring my new podcast “Morning After” with my former Channel 8 co-anchor Ron Corning, writing articles for Toyota’s various publications, and modeling for Avara clothing line, among other multimedia endeavors. And while I reflect fondly on all the early morning laughs we shared in the Channel 8 studio, I haven’t missed one school field trip or one play, and I make a darn good school cafeteria cashier! All in all, I’m closer than I’ve ever been to achieving the healthy work-life balance that my family so deeply deserves. And at the end of the day, that’s my number one priority.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like so many things in life, it’s been a journey. Everyone faces bumps, gets bruises. I think the biggest obstacles that lie along the path that so many people face are doubt and fear. For so long, I entertained self-defeating thoughts. It took me a long time to make this change in my life. I used to think, “There’s no way this can be done.” Or, “what if I fail?” I’ve always been a co-provider for my family, so certainly I had and still have those concerns. But I believe faith always triumphs over fear. And I’ve learned that if you release yourself from negative thought patterns that lead to self-doubt and paralysis, doors will open. I learned to ask for help from others, to give aid when requested, and to take chances. But it takes time. And certainly what you put in and how you treat others come back to you. So, along that road, I remember to move forward with a spirit of gratitude.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
My boutique residential real estate company is Anderson Conomos Team. We serve the entire Metroplex, so whether you’re looking to buy, sell, invest, or lease, you’ve got a dedicated, family-based team enhanced by my partners, Bradley and Brooks Anderson, who are also lawyers. So, they bring that added legal and negotiating expertise to every transaction. Marrying my broadcast skills with real estate, we produce interesting video tours of many of the houses we sell. And we also provide unparalleled marketing exposure – as we also market our listings to our personal sphere of combined 100,000+ followers on digital platforms. So, visualize the American Airlines Center packed to capacity. Now multiply that by five and that’s a visual of our social media following. We are Top 20 Producers in our firm (Keller Williams Urban Dallas) and I received the award for Rookie of the Year during my first year at KW. Much of my multimedia work centers around my new podcasting venture “Morning After” with my former Channel 8 co-anchor Ron Corning, writing articles for Toyota and Toyota Today magazines, and doing various influencer/spokesperson work for local companies like Avara clothing.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I certainly feel a sense of great pride when we negotiate a great deal for our clients. It’s a wonderful full circle moment to sit by their side as they close on their dream home or broaden their portfolio with a solid investment property. When I feel like I’m a part of their personal and professional success – that’s incredibly satisfying. But the biggest reward is that this Chapter 2 – this second wind – has allowed me to be even more present for my kids. They’ll have fond memories of Mommy’s various careers – mornings spent in the Channel 8 studio; watching mom on TV from home; coming along to open houses or to meet a client after hours. I hope they’ll cherish the articles I’ve written about other people’s special moments. But mostly, I’ll be happiest if they remember that I never missed the critical and special moments that were important in shaping them. And that means everything to me. That’s what life is all about.
