Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandria ( Poka) Cox.
Hi Alexandria ( Poka), thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in a rough community by the name of Arlington Park. Due to things that I was surrounded by growing up, I had to make a choice either to add to the problem or help fix the problem. At an early age, I decided to help fix the problem, I went from fighting to making the decision to graduate high school and a year early and go to college. The day before my college classes started my mother had a stroke and a month after my second semester my father had a heart attack. Due to these two tragic things that happened I was forced to grow up enough faster than I had previously. I working full time, being a full-time student, sending money back home and teaching, and inspiring people along the way. After noticing the need for people to gain life skills such as changing a tire, cooking, sewing, building credit, and much more, I decided that would start an organization that teaches student life skills. In 2018 I established Poka’s Practice at Texas A&M University-Commerce, which is now a non-profit that oversees the commerce chapter and is looking to start chapters at other colleges and universities. Along with me helping people through Poka’s Practice I also give advice, insight, and motivation on my social media which is classified as “Poka Speaks Wednesdays”. Poka speaks is now an LCC where I offer different services such as motivational speaking, workshops ( bounding activities ) MC services, Special Appearance ( modeling or showing up to an event, poetry, and life coaching sessions. I am also a Self-Published author of “Your Daily Ounce of P.O.K.A” a motivational book that lists a quote a day to give you perseverance, optimism, kismet, and assurance.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth way. Family issues and finances have played a big hard but making me want to give up at times.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Poka Speaks/ Poka’s Practice ?
Poka Speaks is a motivational company that designs services to best serve the customer. While Poka’s Practice is a national organization (anyone can join) that forces on starting chapters at local communities and universities while also giving back to the local Dallas area.
