Meet Alexis McDonald of Coats Homes in Highland Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis McDonald.

Alexis, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My senior year of high school, I decided to pursue a creative field in college, I thought about photography, graphic design, and architecture. I decided on an interior design, the perfect mix of creativity that photography and graphic design allows with the structure and analytical side that I love with Architecture. I went to Baylor University, and upon graduation, I took a job working on the HGTV show Fixer Upper as a designer and project manager. It was a great two years and stretched my design abilities and my resources. Being on such a tight budget and timeframe, I became resourceful and pushed my imagination. Once the final day of filming for season 5 came, I knew my time was up in Waco, and so I moved back to Dallas. I loved my project management I got to do in Waco and knew I wanted to continue my design career as well. So, here I am, working for Coats Homes getting to pick out beautiful tile and also hang out on job sites checking out electrical and plumbing rough-ins before sheetrock is installed. It’s the dream job I never knew I needed.

Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest thing for me has been questioning my major, getting out of college and being put in such a position where millions of people every week would be picking apart what I did every week on National TV I felt inadequate. I thought how did four years give me the background and experience for this job. I was insecure and was very critical of everything I did. About a year in, I had to realize design is relative, everyone doesn’t have to like what I do, and everyone doesn’t have what I do. I feel much more confident in my decisions and realize it is about what the client wants and loves, and doing what I enjoy.
