Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Rice.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started baking when I was around the age of 12 with my great grandmother Murray “Mama” Davis. She would always assign me to be her kitchen assistant! Together, we would bake cream cheese pound cakes which are now one of my signature dishes! “Mama” passed away May 2009 and that’s when baking became my life.
Baking is an avenue for me to relieve stress and watching people enjoy my craft is my happiness. The kitchen is my safe haven when there is nowhere else to go! To see the outcome of my product sometimes leaves me speechless.
Most of my life, I’ve felt as if I was a shadow; people overlooked and underestimated me and my skills for years. However, I had to start allowing my work to speak for me and that’s why I am where I am today.
Sweet Treats By Lexx is my everything; its what makes me, me! Every part of my business is a little part of me. My logo, my slogan, the colors, and the purpose defines who Alexis Rice is.
March 2019, my older cousin Isabelle passed away; losing her was a traumatic turn in my life. Isabelle was young with such a bubbly, fun, and energetic personality. She went after what she wanted regardless of how others felt. Losing my cousin at the age of 23 showed me life is too short to be unhappy. So I started doing less of what others wanted and thought and more of what I felt was right. Life and my business have been great ever since!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Being a business owner is never a smooth road; at least that’s what I’ve heard. Honestly, t’s hard! Many days I think about wanting to give up but I think if I give up on my baking what else would I do?
One of the biggest struggles I face with my business is knowing “Is this the right thing to do?”
When starting a small business word of mouth and networking will take you far. However, not every encounter with a customer is the same. I try my hardest to please all of my customers to the best of my ability; sometimes it’s not always reciprocated or respected which can make the job hard.
Please tell us about Sweet Treats By Lexx.
I am Sweet Treats By Lexx, we are a bakery business! Sweet Treats By Lexx is something I’ve been running since 2016 when I was a senior in high school. It was my side hustle, something I did for fun. Everyone enjoyed my treats which is what pursued me to keep pushing for my dream. That allowed me to be where I am today.
I am known for my cream cheese pound cakes, moist red velvet cake, and my delicious chocolate chip cookies.
I am proud of my ENTIRE brand! I’m proud of the concept, the purpose. It starts with the products I produce all the way down to the labels I attach to every order.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There is no starting over!
Trial and error are what make companies successful and/or unsuccessful.
With Sweet Treats By Lexx, its what made my brand what it is today. I wouldn’t change it or the difficulties that have come with it.
