Today we’d like to introduce you to AlexXandra Rogers.
AlexXandra, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
“Christian and Crazy” started out as just a blog. I’ve always loved writing and thought a blog would be fun, but never started it. My husband encouraged me about a year ago to just do it, and it started to get a good response and the brand grew from there. It’s a place where I am candid on my everyday life, my walk with Christ and everything in between. It’s a place where you can (figuratively) “come” and just be yourself.
A few months into writing for the blog, I really wanted to provide simple, encouraging shirts for women to purchase from the website, but we couldn’t find any supplier that had what I envisioned. So my husband (again!) said “You should just make them”, and “Christian and Crazy Shop” bloomed from there. The shop started with just simple black and white t-shirts and a few designs- most focused on Christian living, encouraging women and just “real life”- and now we offer tote bags, small gift items and a much wider variety of shirts, all with designs personally designed, printed and pressed by me in the Master Bedroom of my home.
It started as a way to encourage women to be confident in who they are, as well as a way to earn a small income for my family so I can continue to stay at home with my growing family. But it’s so much more than clothing and t-shirts! We want women to feel empowered, beautiful and give them the hope that they can chase after whatever dream they have, even while they’re chasing their toddlers.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I would never say it’s been a “smooth” road. It’s definitely been a road with turns, bumps and a lot of learning along the way. Owning your own business, trying to help it grow, while raising a family and going to school full-time is hard! But it’s worth it.
There were times I wanted to give up. I would tell my husband people just don’t like my writing or designs, and I just should quit trying. But every time I would feel that way, I’d wake up to a multitude of new orders or messages from women telling me how much my last blog entry helped them through something, and it reminds me why I wanted to start this brand in the first place. It’s not about me, it’s about reaching the women and people that need a push, or encouragement to be who God created them to be.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
The name “Christian and Crazy” started as a joke between my husband and me. I knew I wanted my brand to glorify God, but I also know how imperfect I am and I didn’t want to pretend to be anything else. I often call myself the “Hot Mess Mom”- the one that walks in somewhere with her hair a mess and has forgotten about 5 things she needed. So, the blog started out as a way to remind other women that we don’t have to be perfect all the time and it’s okay to be truthful and NOT have it all together. And to find the funny parts of our chaotic lives! I wanted to find a way to promote that in other than just writing, so we started the shop side of it to do that.
We offer t-shirts and other products that empower the everyday mom and woman. Most of our products are faith based, mostly because I always wanted clothing that was but could never find it. But, I also like to put a fun spin on our designs like on one of our best-sellers “Running to Jesus is my Cardio”… we want to stay trendy, but also make the statement of who we are through Christ, something you can’t find in your everyday boutique or department store. Since beginning the shop portion of our brand, we’ve been able to search and find better quality shirts and products for our customers and will continue to do that as our growth allows. We also offer kid’s clothing and some men’s designs and hope to grow both of those lines down the road!
We also offer custom designs. I have a lot of women message me wanting their favorite verse or inspiring quote on a shirt and I will take my time and design one that’s personalized and perfect just for them. Like I said, it’s about giving others the confidence they seek and I like to think our brand does that.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up as an only child to a single mom who did everything in her power to make sure I had a great life. I guess you could say I was little “spoiled” by her and my maternal grandparents, but not just in material things. My mom gave me the confidence and reassurance that I could do anything I put my mind to, but that it was okay to try something and fail. I played a lot of sports, had a wide variety of interests and liked to try new things. She would put me in camps and classes for the things I wanted to learn- anything from model building, to theatre, to voice lessons and a lot of soccer. She gave me an active life and I am so grateful for that.
It’s helped me as an adult to be able to go after the things I want even though I’m definitely fearful I might fail. I guess you could say she helped mold my mind into thinking “I’d rather be able to say I tried, then not and never know”. I hope I can instill that drive in my kids as they grow up.
And as I said before, I always loved writing. It’d always been my way of sorting out my feelings- I would definitely call it my “outlet”. Whether happy, sad, angry… I wrote. I think I always knew writing would be part of my profession one day but never in what form.
