Meet Alicia Nava

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Nava.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alicia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I fell in love with film at a very young age. I was raised by a single mother and movies were “our thing”. At a ripe age of two years old, you could catch my mother and I spouting movie lines to each other where ever we went. Needless to say, I was a very weird child. We moved around a lot but the one constant thing was my mother’s movie collection. Whether the stories made me laugh, cry or not want to sleep in my own bed… I was infatuated with the idea that I could watch other people’s stories in my home. Horror was the genre that solidified “this is what I want to do with my life”. My attention to detail in film grew the more I watched films by Penny Marshall, Sam Raimi, Dario Argento, and David Fincher (Just to name a few).

As I got older I ventured into acting, I fell in love with performing. The older I got the more I saw how little women were represented in the industry in front of the camera and especially behind the camera. And I saw less “interesting” roles for women. We’re always the leading man’s wife, sister, or mother. There are so many stories to be told about women, funny, charming and frightening stories. All of my favorite movies and characters were written by women.. which makes sense because you can’t expect anyone else to tell your story. It’s just shocking because the lack of female reps behind the camera. I truly believe God placed this passion in my heart to do exactly that. Create roles and films for my fellow aspiring leading ladies.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Nothing worth pursuing is easy or “smooth”. Building your craft takes time. Everyone is guilty of wanting to catch success as soon as possible, but to have a lasting platform, it takes time. I believe you’re always exactly where God wants you to be. I made the decision to drop out of college to work towards affording film school and doing all I can to learn and sharpen my performance skills. In between the “waiting” I write! I write the stories I plan to put on screen someday.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
What sets me apart? I feel like this should be a question for people who’ve seen my work. I do everything to the best of my ability and the trust to myself. I write things that make me laugh or I film things that make me go “oh wow”. If you watch or see anything I’m attached to, I want you to see me. I also believe in women supporting women. So, in everything I do I try to incorporate women behind the scenes as much as on camera.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Time, knowledge, and an overall patience. I don’t think I could make this journey without my Faith. Truly, and this isn’t a dream I came up within one day. This has taken time and faith. You’ve really gotta want this and be ready for when you’re given a seat at the table.
