Today we’d like to introduce you to Allan Peiser.
Allan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and moved to the U.S. in 1975 to attend business school at NYU. Between my first and second year of my MBA program, my oldest brother moved to Dallas. Although I contemplated staying in New York, I ultimately decided to move to Dallas to be close to the only family I had in the United States. I started my career in Dallas as an auditor at Coopers and Lybrand, followed by a stint in the finance department at Neiman Marcus. I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and build a business, so I took a leap of faith and opened my own accounting practice in 1983.
The path from a one-person operation in 1983 to a 69 person firm today has been exciting, to say the least. I knew that in order to succeed and be a player in the Dallas market I would have to grow my business both organically and through M&A. My brother joined my practice 1990, followed a very strategic acquisition of a practice of a retiring CPA. In 1994 Goldin Peiser & Peiser was born when our firm of 12 employees merged with Sidney Goldin’s IRS defense practice. Since that time we’ve hired numerous tax professionals of all levels of experience and merged with and acquired other practices in the DFW area.
The turning point in our business came in 2012 when we merged with local accounting practice Bader & Associates followed by a merger with the CPA firm JHB in 2015. The merger in 2012 was the catalyst for our rapid growth spurt virtually enabling us to double the practice in the space of four years and earning us a spot on the Dallas Business Journal Top 25 North Texas CPA firms.
Has it been a smooth road?
As someone who was born and raised in another country, I did not have a network on which to rely when I started my accounting practice. I had no clients, no office, and no staff. I had to virtually start from scratch to find clients willing to work with an unknown quantity. The most significant challenges to the practice have been mainly operational. We’ve had to, and still have to, continually evaluate and revamp how we manage the practice as the demands of an ever-growing business change. There are significant growing pains going from a small firm to a mid-size company. Mindsets and business practices have to evolve alongside the physical growth of the firm.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full-service accounting firm, and as one of the top tax, attestation, and business advisory firms in our region, we provide specialized services, including tax strategy, IRS defense, outsourced CFO, fraud prevention, and litigation support. Our philosophy is to focus on what’s most important to our clients – sustainable growth and financial health. While we work with clients involved in a wide range of businesses, we specialize in three of today’s most dynamic industries – healthcare (medical and dental), manufacturing (domestic and international), and distribution.
I am most proud of the organization we have created. We have become a respected, trustworthy, and sought-after CPA firm, not only in the greater Dallas market but internationally as well. We have an excellent reputation with clients, service providers, and community members. Furthermore, we have created a sustainable business that I know will continue long after I retire.
What sets the firm apart from others our size is our innovation, creativity, the intellectual ability of our staff, our technical skills, and our relationships. The diversity of our team also makes us unique. Of our total staff, nine are from countries outside of the U.S, and our professionals speak more than ten different languages.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Dallas is an excellent place for businesses like ours. It may not be a tourist mecca, but it has an excellent business environment. The growth, especially in Plano and Frisco, gives companies like our the opportunity to expand our client base and attract new talent to our firm. The relatively low cost of living and the rapid business expansion makes it an almost perfect place to have an accounting practice.
Growth in Dallas and the surrounding areas is great, but it is also a double-edged sword. It has created horrible traffic, causing long commute times and clogged roads and highways. Investing in mass transit and highway improvements would go a long way in helping solve this problem.
