Meet Allen Patrick of Gelousy, Clean Batch in East Dallas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allen Patrick.

Allen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve always been interested in creating and performing music. I remember always singing along to whatever music my mom was playing. Fortunately for me she listened to such a wide variety of music. That just set the tone for my musical influences growing up. I started playing clarinet when I got into middle school, and once I started learning how to actually play an instrument I was never really able to stop. I started playing guitar when I was 13, and then shortly after I started learning how to play percussion. I played in bands throughout high school, but none of them really played too many shows. After high school I joined the military, where ultimately I fell in love with dance music. Beyond Wonderland Seattle in 2011 was the first massive that I got a chance to experience. From then on I was interested in how the music was made and performed. I started mixing the songs that I was really into at the time on my computer through Traktor in my free time while I was in Afghanistan. As soon as I came home I started learning how to actually mix. I was focusing my energy on learning how to dj, but I was still missing something. I started learning how to produce music in early 2016, and started a duo with my best friend Jared. After probably a dozen name changes him and I decided on the name “Clean Batch” and have been using that name since. As “Clean Batch” we have released music on local House music label “Flunked Records”, and have had the opportunity to earn bookings from LOLO, Protons: Nothing But Techno, as well as having played many smaller events. I started my solo project “Gelousy” in November 2017, and have been working on an ep that I’m rather proud of! I’ve recently started working at the House of Blues as a Lighting engineer, which has been such an amazing career opportunity. I can normally be found running the lighting console in the Cambridge room!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I’ve struggled with my mental health for as long as I can remember, when I got out of the military and moved back home I was seriously lost. At one point I had made a plan to commit suicide. Nothing was going right in my life. I was unemployed, lonely, and felt like I didn’t have any self-worth. I had an extremely intense personal experience that really woke me up. It just clicked after that, I started focusing on myself and making music.

Gelousy, Clean Batch – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I produce house and techno music under a couple of different names. My solo project being “Gelousy” and my duo project being “Clean Batch”. I also do custom mash up’s and music editing for local drag and burlesque routines. By trade I am in the entertainment production industry, with my specialization being in Lighting. I think what sets me apart is my willingness to learn, as well as my work ethic. What I’m most proud of is how far I have come in such a short amount of time since my “rebirth”

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least about our city?
I really love how much hidden talent there is here. We have such an insane amount of really amazing underground artists and collectives. The thing I would say I like least about our city is how closed off people can be. There are a lot of cliques, and if you’re not a part of one of those clique’s it can be hard to navigate and come up in Dallas.
