Today we’d like to introduce you to Alysha Frieden.
Alysha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in Houston, but I was always drawn to the Northeast. I chose The George Washington University in D.C., and after graduation I worked for KPMG Consulting for 4 years. It was an intense and invaluable time. After 4 years of non-stop travel, I had had my fill of that lifestyle. I had zero balance! I decided to switch gears and entered pharmaceutical sales, which brought me back to Houston. I enjoyed working in Big Pharma during its “prime time”. Nonetheless, I never felt like it was a perfect fit for me. Lots of drive time, a lot of bureaucracy and never felt like I could meet my potential. After seven years of working in Pharma, I met my husband on J date… Online dating can work! Ha! I moved to the Dallas area right before we got married. He had a medical practice up and running and it made sense for us to start our lives together there. Shortly after getting married, we got pregnant with our twin boys. I knew I wanted to be at home with my children. That was always the plan for me if it were an option.
Being a mommy of twin newborns was super challenging to say the least. I loved it but I was juggling non-stop. All of a sudden, I was a “stay at home mom” and I was enjoying most of it for that first year. Soon after, I felt that itch, that need to have something just for me, aside from taking care of my beautiful children. My best friend from GW told me about Rodan + Fields and she thought it was right up my alley. I took sometime to think about if it was for me. After a few months of watching her run with it, I knew I needed to give it a go. What attracted me to the business was being able to balance work completely around my young family and busy life. I knew if I ever went back to work it would have to be on my own terms, with an extremely flexible schedule. Another thing that really grabbed my interest is the fact that this company was created by the same doctors who created Proactiv. I thought if I could even have a piece of this company then I’d putting myself and my family in a really optimal position.
So after the five years I’ve been with this company, it has been everything I wanted and more. The skincare is fantastic. It helped decrease the appearance of dark spots after my pregnancy and so much more. I never knew I could love my longer-looking lashes from my Lash Boost as much as I do, but honestly the biggest reward is the fact that I get to help other blooming entrepreneurs build something that they want. The community of women and men in this company is unlike any other. They are smart, determined, fun, have a zest for life, and everyone on the team is vested in making sure we all do well. We currently are in only three countries so we are just scratching the surface. I can’t imagine the fun, adventure and success we all have ahead of us.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh no- in any business it’s rarely ever a purely smooth road. Since people join the R+F business for a variety of reasons, it can be frustrating to pour your heart and soul into training somebody who doesn’t want to put in their all. But in the end, the right people will stay long-term and that is who will see the most success. The beauty of this business is that the more effort you put in, the more you will get out in return.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rodan + Fields Dermatologists story. Tell us more about the business.
Rodan + Fields is a prestige skincare brand founded by Stanford-trained Dermatologists Dr. Katie Rodan and Dr. Kathy Fields with a mission to give people the best skin of their lives. At it’s core, the brand’s line of innovative products are based on Multi-Med Therapy, the right ingredients, in the right formulations, in the right order, that deliver clinic-quality results without a trip to the Doctors office. What you may not know is that Rodan + Fields was actually owned by Estee Lauder at one point but in 2007, the founders felt the products were confined behind the glass counters in retail stores and bought the business back and created the model as we all know it today. Today, there are more than 300,000 Consultants globally and we’re able to provide a more personalized experience and recommendation to our customers based on their individual skincare needs. And, the products work! We have a robust library of before and afters and are a leading skincare brand in North America.
What do you do, what do you specialize in, what are you known for, etc. What are you most proud of as a company? What sets you apart from others?
I have my own team of hundreds of women and men who not only share our innovative products with people but also get to share the incredible business opportunity with people who they think it’s a great fit for. I do the exact same thing in addition to helping my team execute their own personalized plans and goals. I specialize in recruiting women and men who I believe would be successful in this business and show them how to put a plan into action. I enjoy networking and connecting with others; finding out what their strongest traits are and what they’re truly looking for in life. I would say I am known for being able to talk to just about anybody about anything. I love discovering what makes people who they are and help them use those traits in the business arena. I am proudest of those on my team who continue to build despite market changes and any other challenge that comes their way. I’m proud of myself for taking a chance on myself with this business and finding out that it works for me and my family. I finally found something I can do on my own terms. I own my day!
What sets me apart from other business owners is my training background from other companies, and my ability to fuel my team with the knowledge that they can do whatever they want with enough desire. I am hands-on with my team, but not so much that they feel micro-managed. We work primarily as a team and I am their guide.
As a company, I am most proud to see Rodan + Fields on the forefront of current research and coming up with new and exciting innovations every year. This is a company that seeks to stay diligent about what the masses want and need, to not only provide excellent skincare to its customers but also to offer a valuable business opportunity to more and more people on a global level. This company has only just begun and that truly excites me.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and this business?
Luck actually plays somewhat of a role in this type of business. Sometimes the stars line up and drop my next highly self-motivated business partner right at my feet- like next to me on an airplane or in a checkout line at the grocery store. However, the largest component and ingredient to success is perseverance. You simply must believe you are going to be successful, do the necessary work and refuse to give up until you achieve what you want. My team is called Grit and Glory because it takes a significant amount of grit in this business and in the end you feel so much glory.
This is my unique story. If you want to learn more, please research Rodan and Fields Income Disclosure Statement. These views and opinions are all mine and not of Rodan and Fields in any way.
